We're coming up on one of the most important elections of our lifetimes this November. I won't go into my own personal, Political views right now, but I will say that I truly believe voting is a Civic Duty, and one that is so important, too. If not enough people vote and make their voices heard, disastrous things can happen. Things that can impact many generations to come, and not always in the most positive ways.
By voting, and teaching our kids the importance of doing so, we can take our futures into our own hands by electing officials that have our best interests at heart, and will act accordingly. Just in time for election season, the voting process is brought to life for children of all ages when a charming underwater community comes together to illustrate the importance of participating in your community. A pod of dolphins can’t find enough food in the reef where they have always lived and are faced with an important decision: stay in their long-time home or move on to more fruitful waters. Looking to the group to vote on what their future would hold, the pod’s leader, Finn, doesn’t want Petey to vote because “he’s just a porpoise.” However, when Finn finds himself with a 6-pack ring wrapped around his beak, which Petey helps him remove, he has a change of heart. With Petey’s vote, the pod swims off for a new reef where they happily find plenty of food and a prosperous new life.
The illustrations in this book are vivid and vibrant, and the aquatic characters are friendly and full of personality. The pictures alone are enough to keep even the youngest kiddos engaged and paying attention during story time!
The story itself is brilliant, and helps kids understand the many reasons that voting is important. They learn that, when people get up and stand together, collectively placing their votes for a better life, they WIN. I love this story, and love the fact that it helps get kids involved in and thinking about civic engagement and ways to serve their communities. No one is ever too young to start learning about and paying attention to our political process, and to start caring that policies are enacted that benefit the PEOPLE. Voting is how we achieve this, and by learning young, we have a chance to shape more educated, empathetic, and passionate future voters!
If you're looking for a fun way to introduce the littles in your life to voting and civic engagement, Voting With a Porpoise is a great way to start! Be sure to grab your own copy ahead of midterm elections, or for a Holiday gift-2020 isn't too far away!
