So what do you do on a rainy afternoon?
Here in the Cleveland, OH area, spring is a very wet season.....With some snow mixed in, just to keep us guessing.
On days that Mother Nature isn't on our side, we like to spend the day together as a family indoors, doing things like having dance-offs, karaoke parties, and of course, playing good old fashioned board games together.
With varying ages, from elementary to young adult, it's hard to find games that keep everyone's attention. After all, what a 19 year old finds fun may go wayyyyy over a 9 year old's head.
That's why we love these game selections from the folks at Authentic Agility and Thames & Kosmos. These games are creative, loads of laughs, and bring people together no matter what the age gap may be. (Older kids who can read, of course. These aren't preschool games. Just thought I should be more specific.) They even get the heart pumping and cause some anxiety, too, if you're into that kind of thing. Don't worry, I mean this in a good way!
If you'd like to experience rainy days with family like never before, keep reading while I tell you more about these awesome games. Oh, and there will be a chance to win a couple, too!
EXIT: The Game
EXIT: The Game is a new series of party games for up to four players that offers a unique, unforgettable gaming experience. These games allow you to bring the excitement, intensity, and team spirit of an escape room to your living room. In each EXIT game, your team starts out locked in an imaginary room, or trapped somewhere. You must solve a series of riddles and puzzles in order to unlock doors and reveal new riddles. Each correct solution brings you to another riddle and eventually to freedom. The clock is ticking: You must solve all of the puzzles as fast as you can because the faster your team escapes the room and the fewer hints you use along the way, the more points you earn. Get ready to test your creative problem solving and logical thinking skills, because the rulebook in an EXIT game doesn’t reveal all the rules like in other games. After the rulebook gets you started, it’s up to your team to discover for itself how the rooms look, what the clues are, how to decipher them, and how to escape. Can you crack the codes and manage to escape the room?
EXIT: The Game is constantly expanding with new stories (Dead Man on the Orient Express,The Abandoned Cabin,The Forbidden Castle,The Forgotten Island,The Mysterious Museum, The Pharaoh's Tomb,The Polar Station,The Secret Lab,The Sinister Mansion, and The Sunken Treasure)
Okay, so I admittedly have absolutely no experience with the phenomena that is the Escape Room. I know quite a few folks that are VERY into attending these events, so I do understand the general idea of them and the objective to escape in one piece.
I found the concept of adapting the Escape Room craze into a game pretty cool, and we couldn't wait to try it out. This definitely required lots of critical thinking, creativity and a dash of cleverness to "get out" of some pretty harrowing situations. (There are different themes depending on the game you get.) I love that this game is ever-changing and has an air of mystery, much like a real Escape Room might.
Definitely different, unique, and fun!

AUTHENTIC AGILITY GAMES
See how to play HERE
How Do You See the World? from Authentic Agility Games is an engaging card game that encourages people to go beyond their comfort zone while truly learning how others view the world by asking important questions. The game includes one dice that will select one of the following five categories: Reflections, Relationships, Aspirations, Life’s Purpose and Beliefs. Players then pull the associated card, read the question from the associated category and discussion follows. With variations of game rules and suggestions available, this game can be played around the family dinner table, with longtime companions or with your newest neighbor. A portion of the proceeds from all Authentic Agility Games will support educational and entrepreneurial organizations that are changing the world.
I have to admit, this is my favorite game that we received. I am always looking for ways to teach my kids to be inclusive, compassionate, and empathetic towards others. We teach our kids that, while we have differences, there are a lot of things that bring us together....We also teach them to always, always try and imagine what the world may be like in someone else's shoes, as their experience may be a lot different. Through understanding comes growth, and through growth and understanding, we can hope to help raise a generation that can usher in real peace and unconditional love.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, haha.

2017 SPIEL DES JAHRES RECOMMENDED (GAME OF THE YEAR) & 2017 PARENTS’ CHOICE SILVER AWARD WINNER.
The Fast-Paced Word-Based Guessing Game “EAT, YELLOW, CIRCLE. Do you mean pancakes? Or pineapple rings?” “Oh wait, the CIRCLE is DIVIDED? So something that you eat that is yellow and semicircular? Uh, is it, maybe ... a banana?” “Yes, the answer is banana! One point for the Blue Team!” In Word Slam, two teams each have a storyteller. The two storytellers are given the same answer term. Playing at the same time, they must give clues to their teams so the teams can correctly guess the answer. And they must do this quickly, because they are racing the timer and each other. But it’s not that easy. Speaking and acting is absolutely forbidden for the storytellers! They must tell their stories using only 105 cards, each with one word on it: a noun, verb, adjective, or preposition. The storyteller must be creative in using this limited vocabulary to tell the story. And the team members must think quickly and nimbly to interpret the story cards. The team that correctly guesses the answer first gets a point, and the team with the most points at the end of the game wins. It’s like charades, but instead of acting, you can only communicate with word cards!
As a homeschooling parent, I am kind of in love with this game. Sure, it's easy to communicate using words and gestures...But proper grammar in actual words? Yeah, not as easy as one might think. This game is fast-paced, fun, and keeps players on their toes as they try and guess the correct answer. I also love that this game helps my kids with their language and grammar skills in a fun, competitive way. We've had tons of laughs playing WORD SLAM, and it's become a fast favorite in our home.
Learning should be FUN, after all!
