Health related issues can be scary, especially when they seemingly come on out of nowhere. Could the ailment be genetic? Could it have been brought on by incompatible medications as some nasty side effect? Could the problem have been prevented? What is the best, most effective treatment? Will the treatment work, or just complicate matters further?

These are questions I'm sure we've all been faced with at one point or another. No one likes facing the unknown, and that's exactly what a lot of health issues feel like. Some folks are lucky enough to have a clear family history of problems, whether they be blood or clotting issues, heart and circulatory problems, or even a family history of Diabetes.

My family has all of the above, plus whatever fun things come with an Ashkenazi Jewish background. That was a recent discovery in a DNA heritage test that I took several months ago. I never knew I was Jewish, but apparently, I am. This means there's more, specific health issues my family needs to consider when it comes to our healthcare.

Speaking of DNA testing, what if I told you there's a different kind of genetic testing that can determine exactly the right medications for YOUR specific DNA, as well as tell you which prescription medications should be used with caution or avoided entirely? It's true! Thanks to PanaceaPGX and their
miGene™ DNA testing, you can take control over your healthcare like never before through understanding how YOUR body processes various medications.

How does PanaceaPGX miGene™ DNA testing work?

It's actually really simple! This process is based on pharmacogenetics. The company uses a sample of your DNA and tests to see how various pharmaceutical medications are metabolized by YOU. Yes, this is all based on how your body reacts to different, individual drugs.

Why is this important?

Well, let's say you have a family history of heart problems, like I do. There are certain drugs that are commonly used in cardiovascular care. Because of PanaceaPGX testing, I know exactly how my body will react to these medications should the need ever arise. This test tells me which drugs are completely safe and effective for me, which ones should be used with caution and close medical supervision, and of course, which ones to avoid like the Plague. This removes the trial and error process, and ensures that my doctors will be able to find the ideal treatment without tons of guesswork or potentially negative side effects.

The PanaceaPGX DNA testing process is simple:

• Place your order online
• Speak to a PanaceaPGX doctor to gain approval for the test. (This is just a brief phone call to determine what medications you're taking, a health history, etc.)
• Once your test is approved, your test kit will be shipped, along with clear, easy to understand instructions.
• Swab your cheek with the included materials, seal everything up, and send it back to the lab for processing.
• After your results are in, you will receive another phone appointment so a PanaceaPGX Doctor can go over the results in detail. (This would be a good time to ask plenty of questions, should you have any.)
• The results are securely e-mailed to you.
• Sign a release to have the results shared with your own physicians.

Easy peasy!

We had the opportunity to try the PanaceaPGX miGene testing for ourselves, thanks to Bloggin' Mamas and the awesome folks at PanaceaPGX.

I actually elected to have my 18 year old son take this so that he could enter adulthood with a crystal clear picture of what HIS healthcare should look like in the future.

It's so important to know what medications will be successful, as well as which ones will be a flop. Since the miGene testing worked with Kyle's own unique DNA, his future medical care will be much more successful due to the elimination of prescription guesswork.

Here's a sneak peek of our results. (Edited to remove identifying information.)

As you can see, we definitely received some important information regarding the use of a couple well known medications used for clotting disorders and heart health. (I actually have a few family members that use BOTH of the cautioned drugs for their own health issues.) The fact that my son may have adverse reactions to these medications is invaluable information that could potentially save him a lot of heartache in the future....No pun intended, of course.

Now on to our thoughts regarding the whole PanaceaPGX miGene process.

The Pros:

  • The instructions are very clear, precise, and easy to follow.
  • PanaceaPGX staff is available and accessible during the entire process, should questions arise.
  • Testing is done surprisingly quickly, as we had our results within a couple of weeks time.
  • Results are clear, thorough, and laid out in a chart that is easy to read and discuss with your doctor.
  • PanaceaPGX, with signed release, will send results to your physicians for their records.
  • This process is highly personalized, and is a great way to avoid prescription-related medical mishaps.
The Cons:
  • Phone conversations with the PanaceaPGX doctors seem to go very quickly, and the doctors use a lot of medical terminology that your average person may not understand fully. I recommend taking LOTS of notes, or even recording the call just to be sure that you can revisit and absorb the information that is given.

Overall, aside from the overly technical feel of the phone consultation to discuss results, we couldn't be happier with this whole process. Thanks to the awesome folks at PanaceaPGX, Kyle is armed with the information he and his doctors will need to personalize his healthcare now and in the future. It gives us peace of mind knowing what medications are ideal for his unique body chemistry, as well as what medications should be avoided. This will save a LOT of hassle as he ages and encounters various health-related issues.

I would definitely recommend the miGene testing from PanaceaPGX. This simple DNA test is empowering, and allows you to take your healthcare to a whole new, personalized level.
