With school coming to a close, we're always up for finding ways to keep the kids busy, educated, and entertained. Summer should be fun, after all. One thing we love doing is learning about things from different cultures. I believe that in today's multicultural world, having a solid enough understanding of people, places, and things that may seem strange or "different" is an important thing when it comes to kids. My children absolutely love immersing themselves in different cultures, and they always have tons of questions to ask.
One thing we'll be doing this summer is letting the kids watch age-appropriate, foreign films. One great, South Korean film is set to hit the shelves in June! Spoiler: It's delightfully weird, by American standards. GKIDS and Shout! Factory have announced the release of the charming fantasy/science fiction romance Satellite Girl and Milk Cow on Blu-ray/DVD on June 5, 2018. Bonus features include the short film Coffee Vending Machine And Its Sword, and trailers.
The debut feature-length film from Korean director Chang Hyung-yun, acclaimed creator of animated short films that have premiered and won prizes at festivals worldwide, the highly original Satellite Girl and Milk Cow was produced by Cho Young-kag (The Fake, The King of Pigs), and received an Asia Pacific Screen Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
An out of commission satellite picks up a lovelorn ballad on her radio antenna and descends to Earth to find the source of such sincere emotions. But on the way she is caught in a raging magical battle and transforms into Satellite Girl, complete with rocket shoes and weapon-firing limbs. Meanwhile, the balladeer in question – a loser twenty-something at a café open mic – meets the fate that befalls all broken-hearted lovers: he is turned into a farm animal. But love knows no bounds, and aided by the wise and powerful Merlin – a wizard who has been turned into a roll of toilet paper – our duo must evade the all-consuming incinerator monster, the wily pig witch, and other nefarious adversaries in an attempt to be together.

· Coffee Vending Machine And Its Sword Short Film · Trailers OUR THOUGHTS : This movie was definitely eccentric, quirky, and kept my kids' attention. The story follows Satellite Girl who is literally a satellite that changes into a somewhat human form, and milk cow, who is actually a human, but trapped in the body of a cow. It actually kind of reminds me of a certain film where a gal falls in love with a beast, but much, much weirder. The kids were nothing but giggles as they watched this movie, and they especially enjoyed the toilet paper. Yes, there is a character that is a roll of toilet paper. Strange? Oh yeah. But oddly, it works here and fits right into this bizarre, sci-fi love story. If you're looking for something truly different and out of the ordinary, or you just love all things Korean, definitely check out this fun tale. Will it win an Oscar? No. Not likely. Will it keep your family entertained? Absolutely. We give this movie 4/5 stars. About GKIDS GKIDS is a producer and distributor of award-winning feature animation for both adult and family audiences.
