Now that winter is (finally) over here in the Cleveland, OH area, it's time to get our gardening on....Okay. I confess....I actually don't really have a lot of gardening experience, and am totally new to the idea of growing our own herbs, flowers, fruits, and veggies. In fact, it seems a little intimidating to me, if we're being completely honest here.
Even though it's new territory, after watching a good friend have a very successful garden on via her Facebook posts, we've decided to attempt to hopefully grow some things of our own this year. We've planted a few Lilac bushes, some Blackberries, and some Strawberries, too. I also hope to grow some different peppers and an herb garden, too. Yes, I have high hopes here, and we're going to do our best to be successful in our new gardening endeavors.
When I learned about PittMoss®, a revolutionary new product that wowed them on Shark Tank, I knew I had to see what all the hype was about.
So what's so great about PittMoss? PittMoss is made from recycled cellulose fibers, like newspaper. It keeps material out of the landfill, which allows gardeners to have good stewardship of our planet. The unique physical, chemical, and biological properties of PittMoss maximize the use of nutrients and water. PittMoss is a next-generation growing media. Not only does it reduce the need for applied chemicals and water, it is made from organic and natural materials. PittMoss can be used in so many different ways. Whether you're an avid gardener, a specialty grower, or you like to mix your own potting or gardening soil to perfection, using PittMoss can dramatically improve your results.
This product line is eco-friendly, easy to use, and creates a better, healthier garden?
Sign me up! I need all the help I can get as a total beginner! We received a variety of products to help our herb garden get off to a great start. The first thing I noticed about PittMoss is that it's very lightweight, making it ideal for those who don't want to lug around heavy bags of soil. It's light and fluffy, and definitely won't add to any existing back problems. That's always a plus, right? So far, I've planted some Sweet Italian Basil and some Cilantro using PittMoss Potting Mix.
To plant in PittMoss, simply fill your container up 3/4 with the potting mix, fluff and mix it up, and then tap it on your surface to settle it in the container.
This part is pretty fun, as the PittMoss feels soft and fluffy, and doesn't leave your hands dirty and gross like dirt or soil would!
Then just add your seeds, bury them under the surface, and add a little water. Put your containers where they will get a good amount of sunlight and viola! You've started a garden!
Pretty simple, right?
Xander, my 8 year old, decided he wanted to try his hand at gardening, too. He helped plant the Sweet Italian Basil. He was amazed, too, by the soft, fluffy nature of PittMoss. You see, he was prepared to become a huge, dirty mess, but that wasn't the case at all.
He enjoyed playing with the PittMoss for a bit, and then planting these seeds all on his own, with minimal mess.
He was so proud of himself, and promised to help take good care of our Basil plants this summer. These are HIS plants, and he will be the one growing them. He made it very clear that he wanted the Basil to be his own personal project. Perhaps I have a budding gardener on my hands? The best moment? I asked him if he knew why the "dirt" wasn't dirty. He didn't, of course. I explained to him that PittMoss is eco-friendly and good for the Earth and for plants. We talked about the fact that it's made from recycled newsprint and other, similar materials. This is his face when he realized he had planted his Sweet Basil in old newspapers:
Yep. Xander is shook by that idea, as you can see.
Overall, I love our PittMoss experience so far. The material is super easy to use, easy to transport, and hopefully, it will produce big, healthy plants. I love the fact that it's so eco-friendly and made by a Vet-Owned business, too! I will be sure to post lots of photos of our garden as it grows, and will touch base later with additional thoughts about this product as our experience deepens. I am loving this concept, and have very high hopes for our success! Wish us luck! Connect with PittMoss :

I love gardening but tend to have a black thumb! The easiest thing to grow I've found are herbs. The crazy thing about cilantro though is it needs the right temperature or it blooms into coriander and tastes yucky. BUT, you get coriander seeds, which is cool.

I have no tips since I have a black thumb! I can't even keep a cactus alive! LOL The only thing I have been able to keep alive long enough to produce anything was a serano pepper plant and even that I managed to kill after a year!

My gardening tip is to read up on the plants you are growing to make sure they are getting the right amount of sun/shade and water. I have tried to wing it so many times and have killed so many plants.
