As a mom, I want to do everything I can to make sure my kids are happy and healthy. Part of this responsibility includes making sure that we're tested for contagious disease, such as Tuberculosis or TB. After all, it's better to be safe than sorry!
Sure, TB isn't something we hear about all that often. In fact, it's not something the vast majority of us give much thought to at all. While TB may seem rare to us here in the US, it's still a very real problem worldwide. This highly contagious disease kills someone every 21 seconds, and is carried by 30% of the world's population. It can remain dormant, sometimes for years. That's why getting tested before illness presents itself is so important!
Getting tested for TB has always been a pain....It would require running back and forth to the doctor at potentially inconvenient times, and the skin tests they used weren't even overly accurate to begin with. I remember getting one of these tests done several years ago, and I kept watching my skin, waiting for it to blister or "bubble". I had to be at the doctor during a very tiny window of time so they could look at my skin and make their best guess as to whether I was infected or not. Doesn't sound too reliable, right?
Well, things have changed. Getting tested for TB is easier, quicker, and more accurate than ever. Rather than relying on that antiquated skin test, today, you can get a blood test in just one visit. Trust me, this is SO much more convenient! Plus, the results are far more accurate than before! No guesswork, and less false-positives!
All that's required is a miniscule amount of blood to test. And when I say miniscule, I mean a measly 3ml of blood. That's all it takes to quickly accurately test for and identify Tuberculosis in the system, regardless of the patient's age. Early detection means early treatment, and much less risk of falling extremely ill or even dying from this disease.
I'm very glad that these advances have been made in testing for TB. It's quick, it's easy, it's accurate. And since it can be done in just one visit, I can devote more time to thing things that matter most to me : My family!
