***Disclosure: I participated in a campaign for the Back to School Supply Drive Game on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.*** Here in Ohio, school starts on August 26th. Just a couple of weeks away! My 8th grader is not to thrilled that summer is coming to a close, but he is eager to get back to class and see his friends. I am glad he has a positive attitude about school. Now that we're no longer in Virginia, where he was bullied relentlessly, he has actually started looking forward to learning.
I am busy preparing for the start of the school year, too. I have already purchased most of Kyle's school supplies, and I only have a few more things I need to grab. We're a one income household, so to help keep costs from hurting our wallet, I do a lot of shopping throughout the year. I pick up basics like paper, notebooks, pens and pencils whenever I notice a good sale, and I simply put them aside for the next school year. This really does help offset the costs when back to school season is upon us! Did you know that each year, 1 million students fail to graduate high school? This scary statistic, proves it is increasingly important to support today’s youth. This Back-to-School season, BGCA and long-time partner Disney have launched an online supply drive. By simply playing a pop-quiz style game, you can help donate school supplies to local BGCA Clubs. For every five correct answers, a donation of supplies will be made! You can check out the Boys & Girls Club of America and Disney School Supply Drive Game HERE. Not only is it a fun game, your smarts will help make sure school supplies go to kids who need them. Also, be sure to check out the Boys & Girls Club of America website to see the many ways this organization helps kids in need. They offer so many great programs to keep kids on the right track. They also have loads of information for parents as they prepare to send their children back to school. Do you have a Boys & Girls Club of America chapter near you? Have you checked them out to see what they've got to offer? I'd love to hear all about it! Are you someone who loves to enter giveaways? If so, we think you will love this unique giveaway event. My husband is a car guy. Always has been. He used to be a mechanic, but has been a service manager for several years now. He understands automobiles, inside and out. He's the one who made me get a Mercedes E350 when I really wanted a Toyota, since the safety ratings were amazing. He didn't care one bit that I didn't think it was "cute" enough. Yep. He's a car guy. So he takes vehicle performance very seriously. We're about to go on a road trip to visit out of state family, so Dan is making sure out vehicle is in tip top condition before our trip. He has checked the tires to make sure they're properly inflated. He has cleaned the windshield and windows. And of course, he had to head to Pep Boys to pick up some Techron Fuel System Cleaner.
Techron Fuel System Cleaner is an additive technology that works to get the most out of your engine thanks to a patented fuel additive technology which is trusted by motorists, mechanics and auto manufacturers all over the world. When you use Techron, it will clean your engine, leading to better performance, lower emissions and maximum fuel economy. (Have you seen gas prices lately?! Every bit of savings helps!) Check out this brief video to learn why Techron Fuel System Cleaner is a smart choice for any vehicle:
So while road trips can be a harrowing experience, especially with 2 toddlers and a teen in tow, I can rest easy knowing that at least our car will be at it's best. Now if only they made something to muffle the constant "Mom, are we there yet?" questions I am bound to hear! I received a product sample to facilitate my review and as a thank you for participating.*** A lot of my friends and family jokingly call me a hippie, and tell me I was born in the wrong decade. Rather than being an 80's baby, I belonged in the 60's. Yes, I own tie-dye, listen to The Doors and Grateful Dead, and I also try and use as many natural products as possible. I cloth diapered for quite a long time, and I try and purchase natural and organic products whenever possible. I also prefer holistic remedies rather than synthetic when it comes to my own health. In my journey to live clean, I have discovered a lot of unconventional uses for every day products. One product I absolutely love is Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar. Most people have a bottle of this somewhere in their pantry, and it seems that loads of people have no idea what to do with it. It's one of those staples that tends to collect dust. That's a shame, since Apple Cider Vinegar, both filtered and unfiltered, has a myriad of uses. Some of the uses are actually very surprising, but we'll get to that later! The first use I'd like to mention is cooking. Apple Cider Vinegar is a must-have ingredient for any foodie. I like using it in salads, in sauces, and even in my almost famous Cincinnati Chili. Since I have already shared my recipe on the blog, I'd like to share yet another mouth-watering recipe that showcases this extremely versatile ingredient. I bet you'd never guess, but the absolute best taco meat recipe in existence uses Apple Cider Vinegar. Here's my recipe for Taco Salad: ***Disclosure: I received complimentary samples to facilitate my review. If you're anything like me, you're tuning into all of the shark-themed programming on the Discovery Channel. There have been some amazing and very informative shows that shed light on these feared and often misunderstood giants of the ocean. We have been watching them and learning a lot about sharks, and my kids have been very fascinated. Yes, sharks are scary. Yes, they inspire terrifying movies like Jaws. But did you know that most sharks are very gentle and do not typically attack humans? They're also an important and vital part of the Earth's aquatic eco-systems. Without sharks, other populations would explode and cause damage to the coral reefs and sea-grass habitats. So yes, sharks are our friends. No, really. They are. ***Disclosure: This blog post is part of a paid SocialMoms and Happy Family blogging program. The opinions and ideas expressed here are my own and have not been influenced in any way.*** Having 2 toddlers just 12 months apart in age has been quite the adventure. It seems that every day is full of unexpected surprises, some of them very humorous indeed. A lot of the most memorable stories have to do with food. It seems I have tons of stories about my kids doing or saying funny things while they're eating! For example, my 3 year old, Sophie, LOVES guacamole. She would eat it by the bowlful if I let her. For the longest time, she couldn't pronounce guacamole, so she called it "Bock-A-Boo-Eee". Of course no one could understand her but us, so when she started shouting "I want Bock-A-Boo-Eee" at the grocery store, we got plenty of puzzled looks from other shoppers. My son, Xander, is 2. And he is a little spitfire, that's for sure. I truly think he gives the term Terrible 2's a whole new meaning. Usually, he is resistant to trying new things. If we offer him a food he doesn't recognize, he makes the meanest little face. I mean it's almost like his eyes could burn a hole in you! And he curls his little lips into a nasty snarl, and says "No. I'm DONE. I'm DONE!" If he weren't so little, I'd be pretty intimidated! Well recently, we were very insane...oops, I mean brave...and decided to take the kids out to a nice restaurant for a family dinner. We have a great little Italian place here in town, and they're family friendly. So Xander decided that he didn't want to eat his spaghetti and meatballs. He just wanted to eat the lemons and limes that garnished our drinks. Believe me, I was a bit afraid there would be a meltdown when he realized how sour these fruits were. To my amazement, he actually ate them all, without so much as a pucker-face. Then he threw a fit because he wanted more, and our waitress graciously brought him a whole bowl of sliced lemons and limes. If you can't beat em, join em, I suppose! And Xander was very happy with his bowl full of sour fruit! Do you love to enter giveaways? If so, we think you will love this unique giveaway event. Are you one of those people who worry about artificial ingredients and synthetic chemicals in your family's food? Many of us do with all the frightening research that has been coming out in the past decade. What many of us don't think about, however, is what we use to pack our lunches. Most of us go for what is convenient - resealable plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic wrap, and even throwaway plastic bottles. What we don't realize is that sometimes these containers were made using toxic chemicals, including lead, BPA, and phthalates. Of course, toxic isn't good for anyone in our family, kids or adults! Not only are these dangerous to our health, but our planet as well, since disposable plastics all too often lead to filling up landfills. So, what answers are there for people like us who worry about packing safe lunches and meals on the go? While there are some stainless steel options, many of them aren't the right size for making sandwiches and packing a nicely sized lunch, which can make the eco-friendly options seem inconvenient. Luckily, there is an answer - ECOLunchbox! Rather than go deal with plastic, you can go completely eco-friendly with their stainless steel containers and cotton bags, keeping you and your children safe. With their conveniently sized, dishwasher safe stainless steel containers, even adults can enjoy a sizeable lunch without dealing with extra waste. To learn more about ECOLunchbox and their amazing options, make sure to check out the video about Eco Lunchbox and Budget Earth's ECOLunchbox Review. Would you love the chance to try out one of their stainless steel containers and cotton lunch bags? We are happy to announce that we are working with ECOLunchbox to bring you this awesome giveaway, designed especially for women who want a chic, stylish way to carry around lunch and still be eco-friendly. No other compensation was provided. All opinions are 100% honest and have not been influenced in any way.*** I have to admit, I probably use more facial tissues than most people. I have horrible allergies, coupled with a sinus issue that makes me miserable year round. One of my triggers is rain. When rain is on the way, the barometric pressure changes in the atmosphere wreak havoc on my poor nose. (My nose could probably land me a job as a weather person. I know rain is coming even when the forecast says otherwise!) Sometimes, it is enough to keep me literally bed-ridden with sinus headaches and a drippy, itchy nose. I know...Not the prettiest mental image, right? But this is something I have had to deal with my entire life, so I have just learned to accept it. Anyway, like I said, I go through an ungodly amount of tissues. While most facial tissues are soft and comfortable for occasional use, when you're blowing your nose every 5 seconds all day long, they can cause rawness and irritation. And that is no fun at all! So when I learned that Little Busy Bodies, the makers of Boogie Wipes, has teamed up with Puffs to offer a new, more soothing solution to my allergy attacks, I was pretty excited. You see, these facial tissues are moistened with saline, which is known to do wonders for irritated, stuffy noses. They even come in different formulations like fragrance-free, lavender, and menthol. Sounds pretty cool, right? They call this brand new innovation Puffs Fresh Faces. ***Disclosure: I received complimentary samples to facilitate my review. My babies love monkeys, and have tons of clothing, toys, and decorations that show it. Of course, they absolutely go bananas for Curious George! I remember reading these classic books by Margaret & H.A. Reys when I was growing up, so I am excited to see that my little monkeys love them, too! So of course, I was thrilled to learn that Kohl's, my favorite department store, has introduced a whole line of fun Curious George themed products as part of their 2013 Kohl's Cares Back to School initiative! |
