If you're anything like me, you're tuning into all of the shark-themed programming on the Discovery Channel. There have been some amazing and very informative shows that shed light on these feared and often misunderstood giants of the ocean. We have been watching them and learning a lot about sharks, and my kids have been very fascinated. Yes, sharks are scary. Yes, they inspire terrifying movies like Jaws. But did you know that most sharks are very gentle and do not typically attack humans? They're also an important and vital part of the Earth's aquatic eco-systems. Without sharks, other populations would explode and cause damage to the coral reefs and sea-grass habitats. So yes, sharks are our friends. No, really. They are. Recently, TIME Home Entertainment, Inc teamed up with Discovery Channel to create Sharkopedia: The Complete Guide to Everything Shark—a book full of captivating photos and the coolest facts about the world’s most astonishing and feared creatures. Sharkopedia (Time Home Entertainment, Inc.; $19.95 US) is available at www.sharkopedia.com and wherever books are sold. The book also includes an introduction and special contributions from shark expert and marine biologist Andy Dehart, a regular contributor to Discovery’s popular week-long TV event, Shark Week. This 192 page full-color book includes over 400 vivid photos and offers a wealth of information about the nearly 500 species of sharks. Sharkopedia is the ultimate comprehensive resource for shark fans of all ages and explains everything there is to know about these amazing underwater predators. Its chapters dive into areas such as: · Shark Anatomy and Senses –Explore shark parts, skin, muscles, fins, gills, hearing, taste and touch. · Feeding Habits – What’s the name of the shark that takes small, cookie shaped bites out of its prey? · Record Breakers – Which shark can live over 200 years? · Shark Behavior – Do sharks sleep? · Shark Conservation – Rather than being afraid of sharks, people should be afraid for sharks, as their populations are seriously threatened. Scientists, legislators and advocates—people who love sharks—are working to protect sharks in many ways. In addition, Sharkopedia is filled with information about some of the most infamous sharks, including the Great White, Bull and Tiger. Learn about the two fastest-swimming sharks, how some sharks get their teeth cleaned, and why tiger sharks are known as “garbage guts.” Readers will get a close-up look at what makes sharks the most fearsome hunters in the ocean, read about the Great White “Ring of Death,” and much more. “New advances in technology have allowed scientists to learn a great deal about sharks and one thing is abundantly clear – sharks are not the mindless monsters of the deep that many thought them to be,” said Dehart. “Whether you are fascinated or frightened by sharks, Sharkopedia showcases these amazing animals and allows us to captivate audiences year round outside of the water.” I received a copy of this awesome book to check out for myself. There are over 400 high quality photos, which really help to bring the book to life. My kids love flipping through the book and learning about these predators. Pretty much every shark species is covered, from the smaller Angel Sharks and Rays, to the fearsome Great White. Check out just a few of the pages of this awesome Sharkopedia! Pretty cool, huh? I have learned so much about sharks by reading this book, and I have honestly gained a new-found respect for these often misunderstood creatures. I am looking forward to taking my family to the local aquarium for some hands-on exploration and face to face encounters with sharks! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in nature or marine life. It's packed full of interesting facts and info, and the photos are absolutely incredible! So definitely check out the Sharkopedia and learn more about these amazing animals and the efforts currently being made to help preserve their populations worldwide. Enter to WIN : I am thrilled to announce that one lucky reader will receive their own copy of the Discovery Sharkopedia: The Complete Guide to Everything Shark! How cool is that?!

I have never encountered a shark, nor has anyone that I know. We live in Texas and the south coast is not known for shark attacks although they are there. My thoughts are that we have to be aware when trespassing in their territory and hey, on a Boogie Board we look like seals, Shark Food!

No I have never encountered a shark, besides at aquariums, but I did find a sharks tooth on beach years, eons ago in Hawaii and was afraid the shark was still around, back then in early 60"s some tooth was swimming around looking for the wahine who had his tooth, and I was not a tooth fairy.

I haven't outside of aquariums, but my mom did, when snorkeling in Maui. She was swimming in about 25 feet of water off Ka'anapali beach one morning, when three 5-6 foot reef sharks cruised up next to her about ten feet away. Mortified, she remembered to make herself stand vertically in the water, flippers up so she didn't look like a seal, and stood very still, watching them eye to eye as they swam in an arc around her (the telepathy she sent is not fit for publishing) but as soon as they swam just past her, she headed for shore and got there safely.

I have a healthy respect for sharks and find it horrible that they are killed by the millions over soup. I just heard on Shark Week that Great Whites, and many other sharks are now more endangered than tigers, which is horrendous.

We are so fascinated with sharks but maybe one day I'll be brave enough to be in a cage surrounded by them.

I have only ever seen a shark in an aquarium, and that is the closest I ever hope to get to these animals. They are amazing creatures, but I'm not a tremendous fan. And it's not because of Jaws or anything like that. I just don't want to ever come face to face with one who mistakes me for his prey. Then again, I don't swim in the ocean.

About 35 years ago my boyfriend & I encountered what appeared to be a small hammerhead shark while Laser sailing near Key Biscayne, FL. The water was shallow so it was easy to see him. You can bet we hightailed it out of there!

I've never encountered a shark in the wild, but I've had lots of shark experiences, as my middle son has great aspirations of becoming a shark scientist. Just this past weekend, we went to see nurse sharks being fed in a backyard pool.
