My oldest child just started middle school. At 11, he is definitely growing up quickly! One thing he was hoping this milestone would bring is that his "strict Mommy" would lighten up and allow him to do things I would not approve when he was younger. So when I told him he was FINALLY allowed to have Heelys, you can imagine how thrilled he was! He actually told me I earned the "Mom Of The Year" award! You see, Kyle has wanted Heelys for years. Probably since Kindergarten. I was working at his school at the time, and I knew these shoes were not allowed. Plus, my son is not the most graceful or athletic child, so I was a bit worried about him falling down and hurting himself. I promised him that when he got a little bit older (and more coordinated) I would revisit the Heelys request. Well, I recently got the opportunity to review these awesome shoes, and decided that I would put my cautious mama instincts aside and let him have a pair of the shoes he's been drooling over for so long now. If you haven't heard of Heelys, let me tell you a bit about these unique shoes. Heelys are fashion-forward, fun tennis shoes with a great little secret hidden in the soles: Wheels! That's right! These are shoes that double as roller-skates, allowing the wearer to glide around to their heart's content! Heelys come in a wide variety of styles for boys and girls, kids and adults! When you're wearing Heelys, you can choose between a normal shoe, or simply pop the wheels in for a fun skating adventure. Heelys have a Sole Saver Wheel Plug that allows the shoe to become just like any conventional shoe. There is a nifty tool included to remove this plug, and then you can pop your wheels in the little compartments. Heelys come with either one or two wheels, which make these great for beginning skaters and experienced pros alike. My son chose the the Jazzy design. These shoes are a beautiful shade of light blue, and are made of a heavy duty canvas. They actually remind me a lot of shoes that I wore in the 1990's as a teen that still haven't gone out of style. They are very well constructed and durable, and the rubber sole is heavy duty and made to last. The Jazzy is available in adult sizes, so we were thrilled that they had them in a men's size 7. (Yes, Kyle has some big feet!) Kyle was impressed with how well the Heelys fit, as well as how comfortable they are. He also loves the versatility and being able to switch from walking to skating with ease. As a mom, I love the Sole Saver Plugs. My only rule with the Heelys is that he does not wear the wheels to school. The Sole Saver Plugs allow these shoes to act like an ordinary pair of tennis shoes without compromising the integrity of the soles. We also really like the 2 wheel design of the Jazzy. This allows my son to learn how to skate with more stability. As he practices his skating skills more, we can easily remove one of the wheels and he can get an even better workout. For now, I think we will stick with 2 wheels. Remember, he's not very graceful or athletic, and he definitely needs more practice before trying the 1 wheel design. Here is a video of Kyle in his Heelys. With some practice, I think he'll get the hang of skating in no time! So far, so good. Sure he has taken a couple of spills, but he (and our vehicles in the driveway) have remained intact! Overall, I am loving Heelys! These shoes are comfortable, versatile, and promote an active lifestyle. I love the fun colors and designs, too! Sure, I am a cautious mom, but now that my son has a pair of these awesome shoes, I find myself wishing I had allowed him to have them sooner! I would definitely recommend Heelys to anyone who wants to put some pep in their step and make getting around a super cool and fun experience.
