I lost a woman who was basically like a mother to me, and then in the midst of my grief, I found out that my best friend's mother's breast cancer had returned in full force. This was absolutely devastating for her, as well as for her family, and she made the very brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy while her cancer was still in its fairly early stages. She is still recovering from this surgery, and will be visiting Cancer Treatment Centers of America in just over a week to get another opinion about what, if any, further treatment is necessary to ensure a full recovery. She may need chemotherapy or radiation, or she may not. Either way, she is ready to continue to fight this disease in any way necessary. She is a true warrior, and I admire her courage so much. She WILL beat this, once and for all, and this beast called "Cancer" will be nothing more than a conquest she can tuck under her belt. In the meantime, there is a lot of fear and uncertainty. Cancer is frightening, not only for those suffering from it, but for everyone who loves them as well. So when I hear about companies who play an active role in the fight against cancer, I truly appreciate it. Every effort counts. Every bit of awareness counts. One day this will be a thing of the past, but it will take a lot of heroes to get there. ***Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Welch's. I received product samples to facilitate my review, and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.*** In my household, things can get downright chaotic. I have a teen who is in 8th grade who stays very busy with school, friends, and being...well...a teen. Don't get me wrong, Kyle is an amazing kid. He's kind, compassionate, creative, and just a little bit odd. But I suppose we were all a little bit kooky as teens, right? (Or was that just me?) I also have 2 adorable and slightly mischievous preschoolers. Sophie will be 4 on New Year's Eve, and Xander will be 3 just 2 weeks later. Yep, we had them a mere 12 months apart, so it seems we're always on our toes. My babies are learning and growing every day, and it seems there is always something going on. Whether it be chasing each other around being scary monsters, creating new dishes in their play kitchens, doing arts and crafts (sometimes on the walls) or, of course, trying to kill each other, there is never a dull moment in our home. I guess the latter comes with the territory of being a sibling. Even though at times my littles act like they're arch enemies, they're really the best of friends. Xander absolutely adores his big sister, and he will chase her down so he can hug her. Often, she doesn't want to be bothered with her pesky little brother and puts up a fight. But other times, she gives in and accepts the affection of my sweet little man. Moments like this make me all warm and fuzzy inside, and truly melt my heart. Family can be crazy...It can be hectic sharing a roof with so many people. There are fights, there are tears, but there is also lots of laughter and an abundance of love. There are hugs and kisses and "I love you" is a phrase that is used every single day in our home. To me, this is what's good in life, and I wouldn't trade a moment of it for all the riches in the world. (Although the recent PowerBall jackpot would be a very nice addition to my wonderful life!)
Buying a gift for your other half is no easy task; men can be so hard to buy for. You can always play it safe and go for his favorite cologne, but that gets a little tiresome year after year. Gifts should always be personal, which is why we’ve come up with four gift ideas according to your other half’s personality. The Thrill Seeker: Experience Days If learning to fly a plane or driving a racing car around a professional track sounds like something your other half would jump at the chance to do, then an experience day will make the perfect present. You’ll be able to go along and see his excitement and he’ll have a few exhilarating hours that he’ll remember for the rest of his life; what could be better?! The Fashion Conscious: A Designer Watch If your man likes to look good, then a new watch could be the way to go. Even if he already has one, buying him one from a luxurious brand like Rotary or Fossil will make the gift feel extra special. Plus, when he’s wearing it every day, it’s likely that his existing one is looking a little worse for wear, so it’s a nice idea to treat him to a new one. The Family Man: A Personalised Phone Case When your other half loves nothing more than spending quality time with his kids, there’s only one gift to buy him: a personalised phone case. Sounds odd at first, but you can actually assemble his Instagram photos online and turn them into a collage to be printed on a phone case for him. That way, wherever he is he’ll always have some of his favorite family photos with him. The Stressed Out Worker: A Spa Day If he’s constantly working and gets stressed out a lot of the time, it might be nice to book a spa day for the two of you. There’s nothing girly about going somewhere to chill out for the day, and many spas offer packages especially designed for men. If you book in advance, you can arrange to leave the kids with a family member and head off for a day of peace and quiet lounging around the swimming pool. If he’s apprehensive, just print out a copy of this spa etiquette guide for men and give it to him with his present as a jokey extra; he’ll have to laugh! Now that the weather is getting chilly, I am starting to really get excited about seasonal movies. Disney always has amazing fall and winter releases, and Frozen is one of the animated features I am looking forward to the most. After all, it's from the creators of block-buster hits like "Tangled" and "Wreck-It Ralph"! The film is directed by Chris Buck (“Tarzan,” “Surf’s Up”) and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter, “Wreck-It Ralph”), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Winnie the Pooh,” “The Princess and the Frog”). Featuring music from Tony® winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit”), “Frozen” is in theaters in 3D on November 27, 2013. In “Frozen,” fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Check out this brand new poster for the film. I just love the fact that the characters are buried in snow, much like we w Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Wow, summer sure did fly by quickly! It seems that the seasons go through a much more rapid change here in Ohio, which will definitely take some getting used to. In the evenings, it has been dipping down into the 40's, which is something that I am just not used to in September after living in Virginia for so long. As you can see, I have already broken out my comfy footie pajamas! (Don't hate...You know you'd love a pair, too!) Since we're new homeowners, we realize that there is a lot more to preparing for the cold weather than just breaking out our fall and winter wardrobes. We have to make sure all the little cracks and crevices are sealed and secure, we need to check our insulation, make sure our water lines don't freeze, and of course, we need to worry about our indoor air quality. But of course, since we have always rented before now, we were a bit clueless as to everything we need to do before winter sets in. But we definitely want to be well-prepared so we don't have any unexpected surprises. Thankfully, I have a dear friend who lives in the Monroe, MI area who is an expert when it comes to all things handy. He actually relies on the folks at Iceberg's One Hour to keep him up to date on the best ways to prepare his home for winter. He just had a brand new furnace installed, and his tech was more than happy to give him the skinny on proper maintenance for winter. He has passed some of these tips along to us, so we can be sure to get our own Ohio home ready for the colder months. After all, we have basically the same climate as John has up in Michigan. I visited the Iceberg's One Hour blog for more information, and I learned a lot about how indoor air quality directly affects health, as well as how to make sure my hot water heater and furnace are performing to their potential. (Have you ever lost heat or hot water in the middle of the winter? Not fun. Not fun at all.) Also, I learned some great ways to save money on our home heating bill this winter. Simple things like making sure that door and window seals are tight and lowering the temperature on the hot water heater can make a huge difference in energy bills and help homeowners avoid sticker shock. Hopefully, we won't have any issues with our heat or hot water this winter. We inspected our entire system, and everything appears to be on the up and up. But, as new homeowners, there is definitely a learning curve and sometimes experience is the best teacher. For example, we never really realized that "flushable" wipes really should not be flushed because they can cause the entire basement to flood with raw sewage. How do you winter-proof your home? Do you have any tips or tricks that you can share? I'd love to hear them! ***Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate my review. No other compensation has been provided, and all opinions are 100% honest and have not been influenced in any way.*** Do any of you have teens? Or more specifically, teen boys? I have a 13 year old son, and I swear this child is a bottomless pit! He seems to be hungry 24 hours a day, and often asks for seconds and even thirds at dinner time. I understand that he's growing at a very fast rate right now, so hunger is definitely to be expected. Most of the time, this is no problem at all. I cook rather large dinners for the family, and he has hearty breakfasts before he leaves for school. Sometimes, though, his gigantic appetite comes when it's not the most convenient time. I have 2 toddlers to chase around, as well as a full work load here on the blog. I can't always drop everything to make him yet another snack. Thankfully, Kyle is capable of making some snacks for himself. He loves being in the kitchen, and really enjoys preparing his own snacks and light meals. ***I am posting as a part of the Step2 Test Drive Blogger Program. I will be receiving a promotional item as thanks for participating in this opportunity. Whether it's a trip to the park, a nature walk, or just a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood, we're always getting out and about with the kids. After all, it's a great big world out there, and kids love to explore new places and meet new people. Having a 2-passenger wagon has definitely come in very handy during these excursions! We absolutely love our Step2 Wagon For Two Plus, as well as our Choo Choo Wagon. These are not only adorable, they provide parents a place to tote around sleepy kids who are not in the mood to walk, or those who just want to be pulled along in style. Not only that, but wagons are a great place to store snacks and drinks, or that favorite toy that simply can't be left behind!
