Just click that little button above. Come on...You know you want to! Okay, so since it is St. Patrick's Day, I decided to go with a green theme here...Maybe green things that are cute, maybe things that make you turn green. Either way, green is the word of the day! Woo-Hoo! I think Mommy has had too much green beer today already! 1. This is the only gross one. I promise! True story. Right after I had Sophie, I got pregnant right away with Xander. I had horrendous morning sickness throughout both pregnancies, complete with projectile vomiting. Sounds fun, right? I soooo don't miss being pregnant, by the way. Anyway, I was busy trying to feed Sophie some beef baby food. You know what I mean.. The smelly, grainy looking, pureed mush in a jar. She was in her Bumbo with her tray, and all was going fine. Sophie was a VERY messy eater, though, so more beef was going on her than in her. All of the sudden, I started feeling sick. The smell of this meat concoction had my stomach churning. I tried to call for my husband to help, but he was in the basement doing laundry and did not hear me. (Yes, my husband does laundry. Score!) Anyhow, I wasn't feeling well at all. Out of nowhere, I lost it. I projectile vomited all over myself, my daughter, the floor, and the Bumbo. My daughter thought it was HILARIOUS and tried to play in it. (If that doesn't make you turn green, I don't know what will!) My husband then came upstairs and saw what had happened. He grabbed the Bumbo, baby and all, and rushed upstairs to the tub. Using the pet-sprayer, he started spraying Sophie down, clothing and all. Once he got most of the mess off of her, he removed her clothing and a diaper that was full of what? Green poop. Yeah. Gross, huh? And you know what? He cleaned everything and didn't complain a single second. 2. When my 12 year old was a toddler, he called St. Patrick's Day "Daddy's Day." My ex-husband's name is Patrick. However, he is no saint! 3. I just came across this photo from when Xander was a newborn. The lighting is HORRIBLE and he looks dead, but his onesie says "Kiss Me, I'm Irish!" 4. So my daughter, Sophie, LOVES vegetables. Especially salads! One evening we gave her a salad with her dinner. All was going well until we noticed that she was shoving Romaine lettuce up her nose, in large quantities. We rushed over to her high chair, and we pulled out what seemed to be about a pound of lettuce from her tiny little nostrils. We told her not to do that, and what does she do? Tries to put more up there! She was blowing lettuce fragments out of her nose for a good 24 hours after that!
5. Okay. Not much to say here, but it's green, and it's adorable! You all know that I love Earth's Best Organic products and use them all the time. From their baby foods, toddler snacks, diapers and wipes,(when we're not using cloth) to their formula and cereals, Earth's Best has been a trusted member of my family for years. As a mom, I have peace of mind when choosing Earth's Best. There are so many horror stories cropping up about processed foods, preservatives and GMO's. These are things that don't belong in the human body. Especially when we're talking about small babies and toddlers, who deserve only the purest, most natural foods. This is what Earth's Best has to offer: Pure, organic, natural foods. Nothing more, nothing less. Just as nature intended. When you look at an Earth's Best label, you won't find a ton of hard-to-pronounce scientific jibberish in the list of ingredients. You'll only find ingredients that make sense. Things like fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables, whole grain, and organic meats that are 100% free of GMO's and other nasty additives. I know I usually share all of the wonderful children's products that Step2 has to offer, but did you know they have great outdoor items, too? It's true! Parents take their children out for walks to the local park or around the neighborhood. A next door neighbor might be out cleaning the yard, the mailman delivering mail, the Federal Express truck making stops at various houses and businesses. Unfortunately, anyone who is outdoors doing anything could potentially become a Lyme disease victim, since the ticks that spread this can be anywhere. I discovered this for myself, since I have spent a part of everyday outdoors. From 10 years old through to the present, I was not only outdoors for entertainment purposes, but it was part of my job and part of my responsibilities around the house, since I maintained the yard for my parents by raking leaves, shoveling snow, or sweeping the driveway. And then I got bitten. Likewise, whatever you are doing in your life, whether working at a job or business, being with your family, you will spend some time outdoors—from cutting the grass, shoveling the snow, and keeping up the yard to spending some time hiking. Wherever you are, you might be the potential victim of a tick and not even know it, because you might not even feel the bite. But soon you will start experiencing the first signs you have been infected by a tick with Lyme disease. For example, one day you wake up with some minor symptoms, such as a sore neck or elbow. Maybe you have just a slight fever. But since everybody has something minor wrong with them from time to time right, you might think to yourself: “Am I going to waste time and go to the doctor about this sore elbow? No, it must be just wear and tear.” So you don’t go. But even if you do decide to visit the doctor, he or she may find nothing seriously wrong, since everybody reacts to things differently. So maybe the doctor concludes that you are just experiencing wear and tear or age. So you start thinking nothing is wrong and go about your business as usual. But as time moves on, you start to experience more symptoms, which could be many things – a sore back, legs, neck; maybe you have a fever or sore throat. But even if you now go to the doctor, he or she could still think these are symptoms of just about anything. In my situation, I noticed a strange onset of symptoms beginning in 2005 that were gradual at first, so I ignored them. But then I began to experience more and more symptoms that led me to my first doctor’s visit in many years. At first, I had an inflamed throat that was so bad I could not swallow, which the doctor diagnosed as possible flu. So he gave me some medicine to treat it and it did go away. However, throughout 2005 I noticed a lot more inflammation on various joints, so the doctor gave me X-rays and MRIs, and he diagnosed me with possible wear and tear, but nothing was broken. So while it’s a good idea to make an appointment for a physical when you first feel something is wrong, it can be good when the physical comes back indicating nothing is wrong, but instead the Lyme bug could be lurking within ready to strike when you least expect it. But despite my all clear diagnosis, as symptoms continued, I became more and more concerned, though the doctor told me everything from "Don’t worry about it" to “It could be stress, because you’re working too much.” Then, I began going to health food stores looking for herbs which can treat various conditions. Some gave relief while others did nothing at all. After three more years of doctor visits and tests at some big hospitals in my area, they didn’t do me a lot of good. since every X-ray, blood test, and MRI all came out normal. As a result, I still was not diagnosed with Lyme disease until 2008 as a result of a client who is a dentist. I had come into work one day with an inflamed leg that was so big I could not walk. So when I bossed arrived, I went to the hospital, where they diagnosed me with a condition of a cellulitis infection, gave me an antibiotic, and sent me on my way. The problem was that this was not the correct diagnosis. After I phoned my place of employment to tell them about my hospital visit, the client and my boss instructed me to check for Lyme disease. Though my doctor was reluctant to do the test, telling me, "It is most likely not Lyme disease,” I insisted on them testing me and they did. Then, I returned home, and a few days later, on Monday, the doctor told me the test had come back positive. That was only the beginning of my ordeal, because Lyme requires many months or years of treatment, and the doctor was only willing to give me three weeks because my insurance only covered that amount of treatment. Also, doctor told me it was acute Lyme disease, when in fact I had a chronic case, because it had been undiagnosed and therefore was untreated for several years. As time went on, I did more and more research on the disease and concluded that many people are misdiagnosed that have Lyme disease, such as being diagnosed that they have ALS, lupus, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, possible attention deficit disorder, or other maladies. As a result of such misdiagnoses, people have been read their last rites, have lost jobs, had their families broken up, submitted disability claims, and have even declared bankruptcy. In short, a person can experience everything going downhill, because a Lyme test was not performed in time to stop the progress of the disease at its initial acute stage. The only way to prevent this terrible fate is to know about and ask for a Lyme test, if you experience any strange symptoms. According to medical researchers, Lyme disease can resemble well over 100 different diseases and invade the central nervous system within a short time. So how does this disease get started? It is a bacterial illness that comes from a deer tick, which are active 35 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and are in low lying areas. It is also important to seek out a doctor who knows about Lyme disease, if you believe you have Lyme and the infections that come along with it. A knowledgeable doctor should explain the difference between acute and chronic Lyme in your situation. A big problem in diagnosing the disease is that most people never recall getting bitten by a tick and the blood work for Lyme may show a false negative. The two tests for Lyme are the Elisa and the Western blot. In addition Lyme can be diagnosed through a spinal tap and brain MRI. It is best to ask for these additional tests if the Elisa or Western blot should turn up negative. While these tests may be expensive, if you suspect you might have Lyme disease, it is best to take these tests to avoid what could happen if the disease becomes chronic. You want to catch it in the early stages, when you can easily treat it.
While I actually wear sunglasses year round, I know I get the most use out of them during spring and summer months. Why? Because it's nice outside! During the winter, I tend to stay indoors most of the time. I don't like cold weather at all, and since it doesn't snow much here in Virginia, there's nothing to lure me outdoors for very long. But once the temperatures start to warm up, I love to take the kids to the park, go for walks, and do a lot more outdoor activities. Along with my sunscreen, sunglasses are a must have. Well, any of you with small children know that sunglasses often get broken by curious little hands. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Most recently, my 1 year old son, Xander, got ahold of a $200 pair of sunglasses for women and literally broke them in half. Hey, the little guy is stronger than he looks, I guess! I was horrified, but couldn't really be mad at him. After all, he IS just a baby and it was my own fault for leaving them out on the coffee table, completely accessible to the kids. Lesson learned. In light of losing a very expensive pair of sunglasses to "baby damage", I decided that I was going to find attractive yet affordable sunglasses from now on. No need to make the same mistake twice! That's why I was thrilled when I discovered Sunglass Warehouse. This is an amazing online shop that has a huge selection of quality sunglasses for the whole family. They have tons of styles and options that are sure to please everyone. I especially love their Celebrity Sunglasses! There are no designer knock-offs, and the prices? Well, let's just say you can buy a pair for everyone in the family and not come close to what some high-end sunglasses would cost. In fact, all of their stylish sunglasses are $20 or LESS! With prices like that, same day shipping, and free shipping on orders $25 or more, this has quickly become my go-to for the hottest looks in eyewear. Getting kids to brush everyday can be a challenge...Getting them to floss, too? Forget about it! My 12 year old hates having to floss, and I usually have to sit there like a prison warden and watch him complete the task. This annoys him, and is exasperating for me. He complains that I am treating him like he's a baby, and we end up arguing about why he needs to floss when he just brushed his teeth. I know that flossing can be a (literal) pain, but it is oh-so-important, as it helps reduce plaque and removes food particles and other icky things that get stuck between teeth and along the gumline. These particles can cause nasty bacteria to grow, which can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and ultimately tooth decay. On top of that, flossing helps to maintain overall oral health. So if flossing is so beneficial, then why do so many people dread doing it, or skip it altogether? Well, because it can hurt! Traditional floss can irritate the gums, causing bleeding, and it can actually cut the gums, too! Ouch! Dental floss can also be a pain to use, as it can be hard to navigate in the mouth, particularly near the molars. At times, it seems I'd have to somehow unhinge my jaw just so I could reach better! Not fun at all. It's no wonder that flossing is one of the least-loved hygiene routines! Recently, I was introduced to a product that has changed the way I look at flossing. The Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser is a great, painless alternative to traditional floss, and has many, many benefits. The Waterpik system is easy to use, and better yet, gentle to sensitive gum tissue. The Waterpik features a handy reservoir that holds water, or even your favorite mouthwash. This liquid is then fed through a tube into the flossing unit. The flosser has 10 unique pressure settings and can operate from 5-90psi. This is great for harder jobs, like if you just ate a ton of popcorn, or for gentle, routine cleaning. It even comes with 6 different specialty tips to address any dental needs you may have, from the Plaque Seeker to a special Tongue Cleaner, and everything in between. This product can even be used by those with braces, crowns, bridges, and other dental work! Here are some of the benefits, from the Waterpik website: This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Lenovo. All opinions are 100% mine. Before I became a stay-at-home mom, I worked in the county schools as part of an amazing before and after school program. My "kids" were elementary school students, ranging in age from 5-12. The program I was involved in had weekly, themed lesson plans, and we tried to make learning new things as hands-on and fun as possible for the participants. We did plenty of science experiments, crafts, and even outdoor nature walks and scavenger hunts, all with education in mind. One thing we were lacking? Overhead projectors or monitors to help supplement the material we were focusing on. You see, this program took place in the school's gymnasium, and access to televisions, projectors, and computers was incredibly limited, to say the least. While we made do with what we had, I always felt like something was lacking. A dry-erase board just doesn't engage kids the way a power-point presentation of video can. I recently discovered a great new product made by the experts at Lenovo that could have made supplementing our lesson plans so much easier and more convenient. At under two pounds and less than an inch thick, the 14-inch Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 mobile monitor makes the perfect traveling companion for traveling professionals, like auditors or consultants. While this is great for business professionals, it would also be wonderful in a classroom setting! The mobile monitor works great for ad hoc meetings in places like hotel lobbies, cafes, or even school gymnasiums, that lack access to a projector and even for extra screen space for work that requires multitasking on the go. To use, simply plug the monitor into a laptop via USB and prop it up with its photo frame stand. Tilt the display to the desired angle and choose from 16 brightness levels to get presentations looking their best. Designed to match with the ThinkPad family of laptops, the mobile monitor offers convenience, simplicity and elegance and comes with a standard carrying case. Tested to the same rigorous standards as ThinkPad laptops to ensure the highest levels of reliability and dependability, LT1421 is durable for travel convenience. While this product would be fantastic for on the fly business meetings, I think it also would have been a lifesaver in the after-school program I was involved in. Using this, we would have been able to show videos, graphs, and slideshows which would have made the lessons we taught much more interactive and engaging for the students. The Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 would also be wonderful for Moms' Groups, PTA meetings, and any other gathering that may require presentations. I think this looks like an amazing product to have on hand, and I hope to purchase one soon. This would make early-learning more convenient for my own kids, even here at home!
