Want An Eco-Friendly Period But Not Ready to Try A #sckooncup? Try SckoonPads! @Sckoon #ad6/11/2014 ***Thank you to SckoonCup for sponsoring this post. I was selected for this opportunity to review the product as a member of the Green Moms Network, and the content and opinions expressed here are 100% my own.*** So the other day, I talked about why I will never, ever in a million years use a tampon again. (You can read the graphic, embarrassing details regarding my own personal tampon horror story HERE. Yes, I said graphic. Consider yourselves warned.) Rather than using tampons, which are full of nasty chemicals, I use a menstrual cup. Yes, it's a bit intimidating at first, and there's a definite "ick factor" that comes to mind for new users, but I happen to love them. Menstrual cups are comfortable, non-toxic, and really not any messier than a tampon would be, once you've got the hang of it. If you'd like to tackle your period in an eco-friendly way but aren't quite ready to take the leap into the world of menstrual cups, the folks at Sckoon have a wonderful alternative in their SckoonPads. SckoonPads are made from super-soft, organic cotton that feels very nice against the skin. They don't have that weird, diapery feeling that traditional pads offer. Wait. Is "diapery" even a word? Probably not. But it's the best word I could think of to describe a traditional maxi pad. SckoonPads feel much like cotton panties do, and you can barely even tell that they're there! SckoonPads come in several beautiful and fashion forward prints. I just love this Fireworks Moegi print. It's got rich, chocolate brown and a fun, lime green color. It fits my hippie image perfectly, and really makes me think of nature. If green and brown isn't your thing, there are a few other gorgeous options to choose from, too. One of my favorites is the Gardenia print! Each SckoonPad comes with one holder pad and a snap-in, organic cotton liner. The liner just snaps into place, and then you tuck it under the "tape" on the other side. The SckoonPad stays in place very well thanks to this system. They don't seem to shift around or bunch up, which is definitely a plus. While the SckoonPad isn't thick or bulky, it offers a great deal of protection, thanks to a built-in, leak-proof sheet. You can't physically see this layer, but it's the secret behind the SckoonPad's superior protection. This layer absorbs fluids very well and keeps moisture away from the skin. This makes SckoonPads LESS messy than traditional pads, in my opinion! Another SckoonPad perk is the fact that often, you won't need to change the entire pad. You can simply snap in a new liner and be on your way. There's no need to change the entire thing, unless of course the holder pad gets soiled. This minimizes the amount of stuff you need to carry around in your purse. Major brownie points there, since my purse is already crowded enough! Another huge bonus with SckoonPads is that they're washable and somehow don't get stained. (I always rinse mine immediately in cold water, so perhaps that's why.) These can just be thrown into the washer and dryer like normal laundry. Believe it or not, they actually seem to get softer with each wash, making them even more comfortable to wear. So if you're looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint and lessen your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, I would definitely recommend checking out SckoonPads. These pads are very well made and absorbent, come in beautiful designs, and offer amazing protection. Not to mention, they reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our already overflowing landfills. These are also great to use with your SckoonCup as an extra barrier against leaks!
