Even though my babies are not really "babies" anymore, I still don't feel right unless I can keep a constant eye on them, even when I am not in the same room. Sure, maybe I am a bit of a Helicopter Mom, and that's okay. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and bad things can happen even under the most watchful eye.

I know this from experience. On Mother's Day a couple of years ago, my Sophie ate a button battery, right in front of my husband and I. She physically broke a toy open, bypassing a tight screw by snapping the plastic, and BOOM! Into her little mouth the battery went. Talk about scary! Kids DIE from this! Thank God she was okay...The battery went right to her stomach and she pooped it out. I have never been so happy to poke through fecal matter as I was when I finally saw that battery 3 days later. But this happened while my husband and I were physically looking at her...I'd hate to think about what might happen in the kids' rooms when we're NOT there. Sure, we are meticulous about child-proofing, but things happen.

So even though my littles are 3 and 4 years old, we still use baby monitors. We even use them to make sure our teen isn't getting into mischief. (He hates knowing we can put a camera in his room if we're suspicious!)

Recently, I got the opportunity to check out the VTech Safe&Sound Pan and Tilt Full Color Video Monitor. This monitor has some very cool features that can totally put a paranoid mama's mind at ease....Like me.

Here are some of the amazing features of the VTech Safe&Sound Pan & Tilt Full Color Video Monitor:
  • High-resolution 2.8” color LCD
  • Full Motion video – 22 frames per second
  • Automatic infared night vision
  • 1,000 feet of range
  • Temperature sensor
  • Vibrating sound-alert on the parent unit
  • Digital transmission
  • Rechargeable battery with low-battery alert on the parent unit
  • 5-Level sound indicator
  • Data encryption for security
  • Volume control
  • Out of range indicator
  • High sensitivity microphone
  • On/Off indicator
  • AC adapters included for the baby

This monitor comes with everything you need to keep a watchful eye...and ear! That's right! Not only does it produce crisp, clear video, it even allows you to hear what your child is doing. And if it's something particularly naughty, you can even use an intercom feature to catch them in the act!

Okay, in all seriousness, the intercom is very useful. I used it when my 13 year old was sick in his room. He was able to call out to me when he needed some medicine or wanted a drink.

The camera itself is very compact and can pan around the room and even zoom in for a closer look. The parental unit offers easy to operate controls and a decent sized screen. This camera can be placed on top of any surface like a dresser or nightstand or it can be mounted to the wall. (Hardware is included.)

There are several bells and whistles that really make this monitor stand out. Other than the audio capabilities and the pan and tilt, this also has a room temperature sensor, which is something I hadn't seen before. (Notice in the color screenshot below, the reading is 72 degrees Farenheit.)  The images are crisp and clear, too, as you can see. You can even tell my daughter had some major bed-head going on!

It also offers infrared recording for nighttime monitoring. In a lot of the video monitors I have tried, the nighttime video was grainy and not very well defined. This is not the case at all with the Safe&Sound Pan&Tilt Full Color Video Monitor. The image remains crisp and clear.

Overall, I am definitely quite happy with this monitor. It's range, 1000 feet, is impressive, and I am absolutely loving the clarity of the video, the audio capabilities, and the parental sound alerts.

The only thing I can think of that would make it even better? Wi-Fi. It would be awesome if I could remotely log in and access our camera while out on date night. It would save me having to call home every 10-20 minutes to make sure the kids are alive and my house is still intact. (Remember, I am a worrier!)

Still, this is a very nice monitor, and I would recommend it highly to anyone looking for a great way to keep tabs on their kids. Or maybe even their pets! Priced at $179.95, it's definitely a good value considering how many advanced features this includes. Check it out!
