![]() I'm back with another awesome review and giveaway from Tropical Traditions! I have yet to be disappointed with their all natural products, and I can see why so many people are satisfied customers. This amazing company offers a wide range of products from organic coconut products for cooking, supplements like their Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens, and even beauty and personal care products! I have tried (and loved) several of their offerings now, and I am always very impressed by the quality, value, and performance of these products. This time around, I decided to try the Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent. As a cloth-diapering family, I am always looking for new laundry detergents that will get my diapers clean without causing damage or repelling issues. Most conventional detergents contain harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances that can wreak havoc on cloth-diapers, utterly destroying them by breaking down the fibers or even leaving behind nasty residues that can cause the diapers to repel moisture rather than absorb it. What does that mean? More rashes and leaky diapers. Not good at all. So of course, when I learned that Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent was cloth-diaper safe, I knew I simply HAD to try it! What makes Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent different? Well, it's all in the special non-toxic and environmentally safe formulation. This detergent gently and effectively cleans and removes stains using their Oxygen Bleach Destainer and Deodorizer. This detergent leaves behind absolutely no residue in your clothes and rinses away clean. It is safe at all water temperatures and can be used on whites, colors, delicates, and more! The only fabrics it is NOT recommended for are silk and wool. This detergent contains no fragrances, dyes, fillers, or phosphates. There are also no harmful by-products upon decomposition, making this the green choice for your laundry needs. Another huge advantage to Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent is that it can save a TON of money over conventional liquid detergents without sacrificing effectiveness. Why? Well, powdered laundry detergent is cheaper to use than liquid, and it actually doesn't take much at all to produce a nice, clean load of laundry! Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent also comes in a huge 5lb container, so it will last a good long time! But does it work? YES! I have to admit, whenever I try a new detergent on my cloth-diapers, I get a little bit nervous. I have had bad experiences with a few cloth-diaper specific detergents, and ended up with unhappy, rash-covered babies and I needed to strip my diapers a few times before the effects finally went away. So for my initial testing of this detergent, I washed diapers that were not among my favorites that I didn't mind sacrificing if need be. I have an HE front loading washer, which I absolutely HATE for washing diapers. I have to "fool" my machine into using enough water by adding sopping wet towels to my diaper loads. To wash my diapers, I used about 2 tablespoons of the Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent. It doesn't take much! I did notice that the water got sudsier than I am used to seeing with my regular cloth-diaper detergent. I was worried that it would be difficult to rinse out. My fears quickly subsided when the final rinse cycle started. The suds and bubbles had dissipated, and my diapers were obviously not retaining any detergent. (Thank Goodness!) After drying my diapers, I noticed that there were no lingering smells and all stains had been lifted. This was awesome, since ammonia odors can become an issue when cloth-diapering, requiring stripping. Xander, my 11 month old, has some nasty blowouts, and I often need to sun his diapers to get the stains out. The oxygen bleach in this detergent took care of that for me, saving me valuable time. For harder stains, I use the detergent in conjunction with the Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach. (Another fabulous, multi-purpose product!) But the REAL test? The way my babies reacted to the switch of detergents. Many babies have sensitive skin and rashes can occur when one switches detergents. Sometimes it's due to a chemical residue that has been left behind, sometimes it just happens because their skin was accustomed to one particular formulation. I am thrilled to say that neither of my babies had any kind of adverse reaction to the Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent. No redness, no irritation, and no rashes. I have washed several diaper loads using this detergent, and my results have been very consistent. The detergent is gentle, super effective, and will not harm cloth-diapers.It even works well on bamboo and hemp! I have also used this detergent on regular laundry as well, including clothing, towels, and even the cover for our dog bed. For regular laundry, I use a bit more detergent than I do for my diapers. The results have been wonderful. My 11 year old got ketchup and mustard on a white shirt during lunch, and these stains came out easily. My towels, which had an odd smell, came clean and were finally odor free. I think I may have found a new favorite powdered detergent!
