![]() So now that we're officially settled in at our new home, we're thinking ahead about what we'd like to do as far as updating and renovating. Our house is almost 100 years old, so there are plenty of things we'd like to do to bring its appearance from 1924 to 2013. Of course, it's the middle of the winter and bitterly cold, so most of these plans won't begin happening until the spring. The room we spend the most amount of time in would have to be our family room. It's absolutely gigantic, at a whopping 24'x28', so the kids have plenty of room to play, and we have an amazing space for entertaining. Aside from paint and newer carpet, we'd like to get some track lighting kits to help illuminate the room more. The lighting in our house leaves a lot to be desired, so this will be a priority. Of course this will require some electrical work, so we plan to enlist the help of professionals. My husband has been zapped by household electrical current before, and it's not an experience he'd care to repeat! ![]() Another big priority will be our bedroom. My husband and I have claimed the finished attic space as our own, for a few reasons. First, it has a huge walk in closet...And I have a LOT of clothing! Also, the room is huge and has adorable built-in bookshelves that are perfect for our DVD's and my knick-knacks. This room needs quite a bit of work. It needs new windows, since the existing ones are old and rather drafty. It also needs new carpet because well, baby poop orange is just not very appealing to me. Another issue we're having is that there are no household vents coming to the attic. So heat and cooling don't make it all the way to the uppermost floor, and we have to use other means to heat and cool. This should be challenging, but it needs to be done. In the winter, the room gets bitterly cold and in the summer, it's like a sauna! I would also love to paint the room a nice shade of Tiffany Blue, and I want to put a more secure gate and bannister up. The stairs leading to our room are very steep and narrow, and they just make me nervous! Yep, we have our work cut out for us for sure! ![]() The room that will need the most work is our upstairs bathroom. It's a very good size, but it has quite possibly the ugliest flooring I have ever seen. This needs to come up and be replaced. I am thinking I'd like a stone-like tile or laminate. The funky, Victorian looking wallpaper also needs to go. While it's not that bad, it definitely isn't something I would have chosen. I'd like something more modern, perhaps a suede-like, textured wall-covering with some dimension to it. The tub is also very small, and I am used to larger soaking tubs. So I'd love to gut the entire shower area, re-tile, and put in a new tub entirely. Maybe one that's jetted. Really, the whole bathroom needs to be torn apart and completely remodeled. Thankfully, our home is completely paid for, so we can save and plan for all of these improvements. I know it will take time, and we plan on doing as much of the work as possible ourselves. But it's a grand old house with plenty of room for the kids to grow, and it's in my hometown, which is a huge added bonus. This is a great community, and somewhere I am thrilled to be raising my kids. Have you done any home improvements? Do you have any tips? I'd love to hear them!
