Many people are trying to find ways that they can do their part and help to reduce their carbon footprint on the environment. Sure, things like recycling, limiting time in the shower, and making sure small appliances are unplugged when not in use are great ways to help. But did you know there are other, equally simple changes you can make that have an amazing impact on the environment? One great and relatively painless way to help the environment is buying bulk foods. Nowadays there are plenty of great bulk options from shopping at warehouse clubs or choosing to buy things like nuts, rice, and oatmeal from the bulk bins found in many local supermarkets. How Buying Bulk Helps The Earth :How does buying food in bulk help the environment? Well, in a lot of ways, actually! One of the main advantages would have to be that purchasing staples in bulk saves tons and tons of packaging waste from entering our already overflowing landfills. Yes, I said tons. Check out these fast facts and the fun infographic below for more info: · If Americans purchased all of their coffee from the bulk bins for 1 month (Earth Month), 20,000,000 pounds of foil packaging would be saved from landfills. That¹s the equivalent weight of 7,667 compact cars. · If the average American family bought peanut butter in bulk for 1 month, 122 pound of waste per family would be saved from entering landfills. · If Americans purchased all of their almonds in bulk for 1 month, 6,000,000 pounds of waste would be saved from landfills. That¹s the equivalent weight of 522.5 elephants. (Crazy, right?!) · Purchasing oatmeal from the bulk bins saves 5 times the waste of its packaged equivalent. Pretty impressive, isn't it? So by making some small changes and choosing to love bulk foods, you can make an incredible impact while teaching your children how to love and value the Earth.
