When I was younger, I can honestly say that I took my health for granted. I didn't ever really think about what I would do if I became seriously ill. You see, when you're young, you don't have a care in the world. You never think about the unthinkable. You just go through life without a care, assuming that things will just work themselves out, no matter what happens.
Fast forward several years. I am now 34, married, and I have 3 amazing kids who depend on me every single day. Because my children deserve to have their mother around for a very long time, my health has become a lot more important.
Thankfully, I haven't had any truly serious issues regarding my health. My husband is very healthy, too. However, I realize that health is something that can change in the blink of an eye, so it's very important to live a healthy lifestyle and to know and understand your healthcare coverage.
As we all know, healthcare can be expensive. Even with good insurance, out of pocket costs can really add up, particularly if you suffer from chronic illness or have health conditions that require regular visits to the doctor. There are co-payments, deductibles, and services that may not be covered under your current plan. It's enough to make a patient dizzy, if there's no understanding of the ins and outs of healthcare.
Thankfully, there are ways to help cut costs when it comes to keeping your family healthy. Education is key. If you take the time to familiarize yourself with the complex healthcare system, and learn what kind of coverage would best suit your needs, you just might be able to save a pretty penny on healthcare costs.
The folks at UnitedHealthcare want you to be an informed consumer, and they want to help save you money. (Can I get a HOORAY here?)
In fact, they are so committed to their patients, they have come up with a great campaign called We Dare You that not only educates people about healthcare through a series of easy dares, they are also awarding some great prizes to those who participate. Completing each dare enters you for a chance to win a $400 Visa gift card. Also, weekly $25 gift cards are given out as well.
Pretty cool, don't you agree?
This month, the We Dare You theme revolves around understanding healthcare costs.
I decided to take the dares myself, and I was definitely impressed with the amount of helpful information that was provided. For example, I have always been a bit confused about what my "network" means, and what happens if I seek services outside of the network. I also learned why it's so important to visit your Primary Care Physician before seeking the care of a Specialist.
I love the fact that UnitedHealthcare wants its customers to be completely educated about their healthcare coverage. Not only does this promote wellness, it can also save a bundle of money that can be spent on fun, healthy activities rather than surprise healthcare costs.
