(Who else owns a tie-dye purse, worries about GMO's and has a Jim Morrison framed print at their entry-way?) Aside from the fact that I always make sure to shave my legs and armpits and drive a Mercedes rather than a VW Bus, I guess I am a hippie of sorts. A modern day hippie, perhaps. And that is perfectly fine with me. In fact, it's a label I embrace. One of the things that makes me a hippie is my love for herbal and organic remedies. I truly believe that Mother Nature provides everything that we need to be our best, healthiest selves. Did you know that there are tons of uses for herbs beyond cooking? It's true! I swear by Oil of Oregano as a natural antibiotic and have had great success with it. Clove Oil is also a wonderful topical numbing agent. Turmeric, Saffron, Holy Basil, and Milk Thistle also have well-documented healing properties, just to name a few. (There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of simple and complex herb formulations that can benefit a person's overall well-being.) True story: Dan and I had a very difficult time conceiving. We tried and tried for a few years, and ended up suffering 3 losses in as many years. The doctor diagnosed me with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and told me to take the diabetic drug, Metformin. Well, I took this, and I experienced the worst intestinal issues ever. I was literally running for the bathroom every 10 minutes, and was absolutely miserable. So I started doing some research to see if there were any less brutal options for women with PCOS who were trying to conceive. This is how I discovered herbal remedies. I found an Ayurvedic supplement that promised amazing results for women like me. I discussed this with my doctor, and he told me it was definitely worth a shot, as he had actually heard of this supplement but just couldn't prescribe it since it's a natural supplement rather than a synthetic pill from a big pharm company. After just 2 and a half months of taking it, I was pregnant. Upon testing, my hormone levels and counts were right on track, which was something we struggled with before, leading to miscarriages. So basically, a NATURAL, herbal supplement did what the Metformin couldn't. My daughter is 4 years old now, and we got an added surprise when our now 3 year old son, Xander, was conceived shortly after Sophie's birth. And this is how my love of herbal supplements was born. I haven't looked back since. I know what some of you are thinking: These can't possibly work. Medicine comes from the doctor, not from the garden. Well, I fully acknowledge that doctors are important, and often necessary. However, did you know that the human body can build a resistance to commonly prescribed medications, particularly antibiotics, rendering them useless over time? Also, certain medications have some pretty nasty side-effects that can be prevented by choosing a more natural approach, like herbal extracts from Herb Pharm. (Of course you should always consult a health care professional before taking any new supplements.) About Herb Pharm :"Herb Pharm's mission is to provide our customers with the highest quality herbal healthcare products, and to educate them on their safe and effective use. We will continue to judge our success not by our profits but by the numerous communications from our customers telling us how their health has been enhanced and restored through our education and products. " Our Thoughts :I received a nice variety of products from Herb Pharm to check out for myself. Most are liquid extracts, but I also received 2 bottles of gluten-free, vegetarian capsules. The Milk Thistle supplement is something I take daily. In November, I had emergency surgery and had to have my gall-bladder removed. So now, my poor liver has to work extra hard to process all of the toxins in my body. Herb Pharm Milk Thistle provides liver support in the form of 280mg of Milk Thistle and 140mg of silymarin. Herb Pharm's Milk Thistle assayed extract is prepared from mature, dark seeds of Silybum marianum plants. By extracting with alcohol they avoid the harsh synthetic chemicals commonly used to extract Milk Thistle seeds, and they mantain the bioactivity of the original seeds themselves. I also received the Anxiety Soother. Anyone who knows me is well aware of the fact that I suffer from social anxiety. I have panic attacks when faced with situations where I have to mingle with people I don't know. My shyness and anxiety hold me back, and it drives me insane. So of course, this supplement is a must-have in my book. Each vegetarian capsule contains 115 mg of Kava (Piper methysticum) rhizome and root extract, providing 34 mg of kavalactones and a 270 mg proprietary blend of Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) flowering herb extract, Albizia (Albizia julibrissin) stem bark extract and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root extract. Anxiety Soother is carefully blended to help alleviate instances of occasional and mild anxiety. Its primary ingredients, Kava and Passionflower, are two of the most widely recognized anti-anxiety herbs available. Now for the fun part...The liquid herbal extracts! I received a nice selection of these products. Each herbal extract is specifically formulated to address different issues or concerns. Liquid herbal extracts are gluten-free, and are easy to take. You simply follow the dosage instructions and add the appropriate amount of drops to water or juice. It is not recommended to take this alone, as herbs have very strong flavors and can leave a not-so-pleasant taste in the mouth. The Relaxing Sleep has definitely helped me fall asleep and stay asleep longer, thanks to its blend of herbs that help to promote rest and relaxation. Included in this blend are: Valerian rhizome & roots (Valeriana officinalis), Passionflower flowering herb (Passiflora incarnata),Hops strobile (Humulus lupulus),Chamomile flower (Matricaria recutita), and Catnip leaf & flowering tips (Nepeta cataria) PMS Comfort is also a life-saver in my home. (Just ask my hubby!) This blend of herbs can help provide comfort during PMS-time, and can also help improve mood and lessen irritability. Included in this blend are: Chaste Tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), Dong Quai root (Angelica sinensis), Motherwort leaf & flower (Leonurus cardiaca),Muira Puama stem & bark (Ptychopetalum olacoides), andGinger rhizome (Zingiber officinale). Smoker's Assist is something I got for my husband. He has been smoking for...Well...Let's just say a REALLY long time. He wants to quit, but has a very difficult time of it. The Smoker's Assist contains a great blend of herbs that can help crush those cravings and make quitting a bit more bearable. Included in this blend are: Oat 'milky' seed (Avena sativa), Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Lobelia herb & seed (Lobelia inflata), and Nutmeg seed (Myristica fragrans). I also received a couple more cleanse and detox products, the Dandelion extract and Burdock Blend. These both promote a healthy liver and digestive system, and are taken mixed into water or juice. The last product I received is one I am absolutely loving. The Athlete's Power is a potent blend of herbs that promote energy, endurance and stamina. This has come in very handy since one of my goals this year is to lose 20lbs, hopefully by my birthday at the end of June. (Yeah, I know. Not likely.) I have a treadmill, but sometimes I lack the motivation and energy to actually get on the darn thing. Athlete's Power has definitely helped me find my "get up and go". This blend includes: Sarsaparilla root (Smilax regelii),Saw Palmetto Berry ,Eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus senticosus), and Gotu Kola herb (Centella asiatica). Overall, I am absolutely loving my Herb Pharm experience. These single herb extracts and herbal blends are wonderful, gluten-free, and effective. These products are of the highest quality and are manufactured in a safe, controlled environment. It really is a science getting the perfect herbal blends! I appreciate this brand's dedication to bringing Mother Nature into our medicine cabinets, and I also love the fact that they offer so many different products to address basically any need you might have. If you've been curious about herbal supplements, I would definitely recommend checking out Herb Pharm. ***Please note: Since these products are all natural and organic, they have not been evaluated by the FDA.
