![]() I was so excited when I got the opportunity to help author Monica Leonelle celebrate the launch of her new book, "Socialpunk", the first installment of a futuristic, Cyber-Punk trilogy. You see, I love to read. I have thousands of books. However, I don't get too much time to read since I am busy caring for 2 toddlers and a moody preteen all day! So this review opportunity was a nice, huge breath of fresh air, and even got me some alone time so I could read the story. (Woo-Hoo!) Socialpunk Description: Ima would give anything to escape The Dome and learn what’s beyond its barriers, but the Chicago government has kept all its citizens on lockdown ever since the Scorched Years left most of the world a desert wasteland. When a mysterious group of hooded figures enters the city unexpectedly, Ima uncovers a plot to destroy The Dome and is given the choice between escaping to a new, dangerous city or staying behind and fighting a battle she can never win. Just the blurb makes you want to dive right into this apocolyptic plot, doesn't it? I found myself completely drawn into the story, right from the first page. The plot is futuristic Chicago, (GO BEARS!) and most of the world is uninhabitable due to a period of destruction known as "The Scorched Years". The main character, a likeable character named Ima, discovers a vicious plot to destroy her safe haven, and is forced to make some painful and frightening decisions, and in the end, embark on a path of love and self-discovery. I am not going to give any spoilers here. I promise, I won't. This is a book you have to read, and I don't want to ruin the adventure for anyone. What I will say is this: I really enjoyed this book. I am not usually a huge fan of sci-fi, but Socialpunk was well-written, engaging, and had a bit of a feminine touch that made it an easy read. Think of it like a chick-friendly version of The Terminator, Matrix, or Total Recall. Sure, there's plenty of action, but just enough romance to balance it out perfectly. I really liked the characters, too. Ima was the most relatable in my mind. She starts out naiive and unsure of herself, and throughout the story she begins to blossom into a strong, confident leader. Girl power! I also enjoyed how quickly this story moves...I don't always have time to read for days on end, and the first novel in the trilogy is a quick, engaging read. The only thing I didn't like? Well, I don't know how the story will end! Guess I have to wait and read the next 2 novels to find out. Have I ever mentioned that I hate waiting? I would definitely recommend Socialpunk to readers who love an adventurous story that's full of twists and turns! BUY IT: You can purchase Socialpunk on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble WIN IT!
