My preschoolers love hands-on activities. They love to create and explore the world around them, and if they can get a little messy? Well, apparently that's even better in their eyes. One of their favorite ways to engage in creative play is to use Play-Doh to make different shapes, figures, and even vehicles. They have tons of fun, all while using their imaginations and developing their fine motor skills.

Recently, I discovered a wonderful line-up of Play-Doh books from Silver Dolphin Books  that encourage hands-on learning through play. Of course learning is always more fun for kids when it's disguised as playtime! These books offer children new ways to explore things like jungle and aquatic life, vehicles, and even life on the farm. They're geared towards younger children, but my husband and I have been enjoying shaping fun Play-Doh creatures, too!
Silver Dolphin Books recently released three new series of Play-Doh books, including:

  1. PLAY-DOH: Hands on Learning Series:  Explore the pages of these entertaining books with your trusty animal guides as they share their knowledge. This exciting, new series provides youngsters with interesting facts about their favorite things. Each  10-page, full-color book includes five tutorials and four cans of PLAY-DOH compound, so young sculptors can create their own imitations of the PLAY-DOH illustrations as well as add finishing touches to each scene in the book. The first title in the series is PLAY-DOH Hands On Learning: In The Jungle  which features the adventures of a little lion who makes five new friends as he explores the jungle – a cheeky monkey, a happy hippo, a friendly frog, a sneaky snake, and a spotted giraffe.  PLAY-DOH Hands On Learning: Under the Sea   takes young readers deep into the ocean with an adorable octopus, a super sea star, a clownish clown fish, a fancy sea horse, and a not-so-scary shark. Each colorful page includes amazing facts about sea and its inhabitants making learning fun.
  2. PLAY-DOH: Sound Series:  Stretch those vocal chords – it’s time for sing-along! In this musical series, two childhood mainstays come together – PLAY-DOH sculpts and nursery songs. Press the button on the musical books and follow along with illustrations of lovable animals. All pre-schoolers will love the classic childhood tunes of PLAY-DOH: Old MacDonald Had a Farm  with all of its moo-moos here and oink-oinks there and PLAY-DOH: The Wheels on the Bus  that go ‘round and ‘round. The books are sure to perfect to bring along on family summer road trips.
  3. PLAY-DOH: Story Fun Series:  Little ones love to explore the world. With trips through the truck yard, the farm, and the jungle featuring adorable PLAY-DOH animals, these books teach children – ages 3 and up – about their environments and  the places they live. Each 12-page board book comes with a can of PLAY-DOH compound making it fun to transform dirt and rubble into a beautiful city in PLAY-DOH: Trucks ; create new animal friends for Mommy and Baby Giraffe in PLAY-DOH: Jungle Friends ; and spend a day on the farm with PLAY-DOH: Farm Friends   and learn about the many farm animals that Mommy and Baby Cow meet.

our thoughts :

Sophie and Xander couldn't wait to get their hands on these books! They love reading anyway, but when they saw the brightly colored Play-Doh canisters that came along with them, they squealed with delight. Hmm... I wonder if I give my teenager Play-Doh along with his high-school textbooks, he will suddenly become more interested in his studies? I'm sure that's just wishful thinking.

Anyway, before we got our hands into the Play-Doh, the kids wanted to check out the Sound Series. They loved seeing the school bus go through town, and of course, pressing the button to hear the music. They sang and danced, and had a good old time. They're a little jealous of their big brother now, since he gets to ride a bus to school every day!

The next thing they wanted to do was create fun marine life with their Play-Doh. Luckily, the Play-Doh Hands On Learning: Under the Sea book offers easy to understand, step-by-step instructions on how to make several colorful sea creatures, like an octopus, sea star and more.
Picture
Now my little ones are only 3 and 4 years old, so I didn't think they'd be able to create anything too impressive. Boy, was I wrong! Sophie and Xander worked together to create this vibrant sea star! Sophie made the body while Xander applied the spots. Pretty impressive, if I do say so myself! I love it when my kids choose to work together as a team. It sure beats trying to kill each other every chance they get!
Picture
We had an absolute blast learning about different creatures and creating them using Play-Doh. Just look at the smile on Xander's face! He was so proud of himself for helping to create their beautiful sea star.

Overall, I am definitely very impressed with the Play-Doh books from Silver Dolphin Books. These board-books are incredibly durable, brightly colored, and offer young children a myriad of ways to explore the world around them. And they get to play with mushy, squeezable Play-Doh. It just doesn't get much better than that!
