You may recall I recently reviewed Heelys. My 11 year old son was so thrilled to get a pair, and he has been having a blast learning how to "skate" wearing these popular wheeled sneakers. So naturally, when I heard they make Heelys for adults, I jumped at the opportunity to try them out! Sure, I am 30 years old and haven't even been rollerskating since I was about 10. But I wasn't going to let my complete and total inexperience hold me back. Part of staying young is trying new things, and I am now the coolest Mom on the block according to my preteen. Why? Because I have Heelys!
Heelys have been quite the rage for years among kids. These shoes are quite ingenious, really. They appear just like normal tennis shoes, but they have a nifty little secret hidden away in the soles: Wheels! Heelys come in one and two wheel designs, which can be customized according to skill level. Two wheels are easiest to learn with, and once the user has it mastered, you can remove one of the wheels and pop in one of the plugs and voila!- You've now got the one wheel design and are able to challenge yourself even further. When you're not skating around town, you can easily wear Heelys as regular shoes by removing the wheels altogether and placing the heel plugs in.
When I received my Heelys, I must admit I was a little bit intimidated. After all, this is something very new to me, and I knew that I would probably fall on my butt several times before I got the hang of it. (I was right!) However, I was definitely up to the challenge, and I fell in love with my Heelys as soon as I opened the box. The shoes I chose are adorable! They're black with neon pink trim, and are definitely my style. They came with 2 wheels, since the design I chose is the one-wheeled design, and a special little tool that makes switching out the wheels and sole plugs effortless and quick. Take a look!
Before I tried skating, I tried the Heelys on and walked around in them, hoping to break them in. They actually didn't need it, as they're incredibly comfortable right out of the box! Heelys are also very well made with high quality materials, sturdy rubber soles, and beautiful stitching on the shoes. After I walked around the house for a bit, mustering up my courage to pop in the wheels and try my hand at gliding, we decided to take it out to the driveway for my first attempt at rolling around in my Heelys! I must confess: I felt a bit nervous and more than a little bit silly since I have never tried these shoes before. Surprisingly, I got rolling with little effort and I didn't bust my butt the first time. I definitely wouldn't say I was overly graceful, but not a terrible first attempt:
Overall, I have really been enjoying my Heelys. They're definitely a bit challenging, but I am having a great time learning how to glide around on them. My son is thrilled that Mommy can ride around with him, and he even enjoys laughing at me when I wipe out. Hey, practice makes perfect, right? I love the fun designs available, and think it's pretty darn awesome that Heelys are available in adult sizes as well. This makes Heelys a great family activity!
