Earth Day is a couple of days away! (This year, it falls on Wednesday, April 22nd.) Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to take little steps to a cleaner, greener life. That's how we go green, at least. Little bits at a time. It's a process. While my Mercedes might not be overly fuel-efficient, my produce is almost always organic, we cloth-diapered, and are always looking for greener alternatives whenever possible.
This Wednesday, the kiddos and I will be heading to the great outdoors. We will be having a "Green Picnic", with all organic snacks. We will be using some really great compostable, eco-friendly tableware from repurpose. After we eat, we will be cleaning up litter at a local park.I love the fact that I can get the kids involved, and really teach them hands-on ways they can help the environment and reduce their carbon footprint. Every little effort helps, right?
Okay, so I realize most people aren't aware that there is such a thing as compostable, disposable tableware. I sure didn't! And any time I was forced to use anything disposable, I would feel a twinge of guilt. Not even kidding. I'd feel awful for using things that I knew were wasteful.
And then, a great brand called repurpose reached out to me. This woman-owned brand is changing the game, one bowl, cup, and plate at a time. Oh, they also have cutlery. Can't forget those knives, spoons, and forks!
Anyway, repurpose offers these essential products that we all use from time to time, but in an eco-friendly model, so to speak. This brand makes all of their products from renewable, plant-based materials. There are no chemicals like BPA, and all of these products are compostable. While it may seem wasteful to use disposable dishes now, think of the good they will do for the soil later. Since these break down quickly, they will fit right in to your existing compost pile and will feed those gardens, too! Seriously, why didn't someone think of this before?
I received a nice assortment of repurpose products to check out for myself. Included were large and small plates, bowls, cutlery, as well as cold beverage cups and even coffee-type cups with lids.
I have to admit, at first I was worried that these wouldn't hold up against things that are "wet" like potato salad, cole slaw, or some grilled chicken that's slathered in BBQ sauce. I was absolutely delighted to find that these cardboard-like dishes are incredibly durable, and didn't deteriorate with the moisture from my food. I was even able to walk around with my plate, much like one would do at a picnic or outdoor function, and it held up quite well. I am pretty darn impressed!
Overall, I am definitely loving this environmentally friendly tableware from repurpose. It is definitely great quality, and would be perfect for all of those picnics and summer events! And of course, I love the fact that these products don't harm the environment like their traditional counterparts do.. I don't have to feel guilty about adding more plastic and chemicals to our landfills when choosing repurpose.
And plastics? They don't really break down very well. It can take CENTURIES. Really. Look it up. It's crazy how much trash we are adding to the planet, and how long it will really take for that waste to be absorbed by the Earth. Not to mention the nasty chemicals that make their way into our soil and waterways. Okay. Sorry. I will step off of my Hippie Soapbox now.
These products are amazing, though. If you're looking for easy, painless ways to live a cleaner, greener life, definitely check out what repurpose has to offer. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
