***Disclosure: All information and materials were provided by Scholastic. All opinions are 100% honest and have not been influenced in any way.*** In today's increasingly global atmosphere, being able to communicate in a second language is a very helpful skill to have. In fact, many career fields give preferential treatment to applicants who are bi-lingual. This means that teaching our kids a second language from an early age will definitely help them have an edge as they grow older. In my home, we like to celebrate diversity, and we use several outlets to expose our kids to varying languages. Some are language DVD sets, including full-immersion programs, and others teach language in a more conventional way. Another thing we do to help our children learn foreign language basics is watch multi-cultural children's programming, like "Maya & Miguel". Sophie and Xander absolutely adore following Maya and Miguel in their adventures, and they also love picking up new phrases and words in Spanish! To celebrate its exciting 10thanniversary milestone, Scholastic Media’s award-winning TV series, Maya & Miguel™, makes its debut on iTunes – just in time for National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). For the very first time, all 65 episodes of the energetic animated adventures of 10-year-old twins Maya and Miguel Santos are now available for download on iTunes in a collection featuring six volumes for hours of hilarious entertainment – and multicultural learning – anytime, anywhere! “For more than a decade, young viewers, particularly English language learners, have strongly connected with Maya & Miguel, and we’re delighted to introduce even more kids and families to the spirited sibling stars and their engaging escapades with the upcoming launch on iTunes,” said Deborah A. Forte, President, Scholastic Media and executive producer and creator of the show. “Maya & Miguel was a groundbreaking success when it first premiered in 2004 and the show, with its emphasis on the importance of multiculturalism, friendship and family, remains just as relevant with today’s children and parents.” As the Hispanic population in the U.S. continues to increase – Census Bureau data released in June estimates the numbers have grown to 54 million as of July 1, 2013 – it is more important than ever that all children see themselves and their cultures represented in the media. The long-running Maya & Miguel TV series, airing on PBS KIDS (check local listings), chronicles the exuberant exploits of the dynamic duo, Maya and Miguel, along with their relatives and friends, set against the backdrop of a culturally-rich neighborhood. Showcasing a positive portrayal of Latino family life, language and cultures, the series aims to promote the value of a diverse society while supporting English language learning. In addition to iTunes, episodes of Maya & Miguel are available for digital download in the LeapFrog App Center. I took 6 years of Spanish and probably retained 10% of it. If you don't use it, you lose it. I never taught my kids any other language.

Yes, am trying. I took Spanish in college and am trying to teach her what I remember. If you don't use it, you lose it.

Our 6 year old grandson speaks some Japanese. His other grandmother is from Japan so she has taught him a lot of words.

We're Filipino so hubby and I talk in Filipino (Tagalog) at home. My daughters can understand tagalog but they can't speak Filipino. We're trying to make them talk in Filipino though. :)
