We bought brand new patio furniture, a 3-person swing, a new grill, and even a huge wooden playground. Add to that our hammock and fire pit, and we've got tons of ways to enjoy the warmer weather. One thing we have been noticing, especially in the evenings while we're cooking out, are mosquitoes. I don't know about you, but I hate these little buggers! Not only are they a nuisance, they carry scary diseases like West Nile. My Great-Aunt was infected with this a few years back, and it made her very, very ill. So we've been looking for visually appealing solutions that can combat our mosquito problem while remaining safe for our kids and pets. Television personality John Gidding recently partnered with Terminix to provide a variety of easy, low-cost design tips that will add simple, elegant touches to any outdoor space and allow families to enjoy a virtually mosquito-free environment. “Simple, low-cost touches can really transform an outdoor space,” said Gidding. “And once you design your perfect space, make sure you’re able to enjoy it by avoiding pesky mosquitoes with the Terminix ALLCLEAR line of misters and repellers. These all-natural products not only protect your family from up to 95% of mosquitoes, but are also attractive and adapt to any design.” Below are some of Gidding’s outdoor design tips. A full assortment of how-to tips can be found at the Terminix website or YouTube channel.
Now that you have design ideas, assure you can enjoy your outdoor space with the Terminix ALLCLEAR line of mosquito solutions. The products include two repellers, which use fan-based diffusion technology to circulate a safe, botanical mixture of lemongrass, cinnamon, peppermint and geranium oils, and two misters which dispense a fine mist in areas ranging from 300 to 2,000 square feet.
In recent years there has also been a dramatic rise in the number of reported cases in the United States of West Nile virus, with 2012 marking an all-time high. The potentially serious illness is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend using an insect repellant to prevent bites and minimize risk. Terminix also recommends homeowners heed the following practical tips to keep their families and pets better protected from mosquitoes this season:
These are some wonderful tips to help make sure your family enjoys the summer season to the fullest while remaining safe from the risks that mosquitoes pose. I know I will be following this advice myself, as well as investing in some of these great products to help protect our outdoor living space. Outdoors I try to make sure there is no standing water. We use candles, off,fly swatters and bug spray.Indoors I put bait down if needed. Luckily it was only once. After that find out how it got in and seal up the space.

Outside the home we empty pots, containers, etc that may catch water that sits cause mosquitos love to breed in standing water. Hubby sprays yard and bushes for ticks and the like, use citronella torches when outside in evening to run off mosquitos and those horrible horse flies, hubby kills with swatter, *they bite)

We have Terminix come out every couple of month (or more when the fleas & ticks are bad) to spray. It's the only way to keep them under control without spending a small fortune on sprays that don't work! We've also discovered a couple of black widows so we'll have to have them spray for spiders next time they are here too!

For pesky spring ants I make a batch of borax, sugar & water. It makes about a 2 quart container. I keep it in a Tupperware container designated just for that. Dip a cotton ball to saturate, then set in an area where the ants are. You will notice them for a few days still as the others have gotten the message to come for food. They will. :) They'll carry it back to the mound & everyone will feed. And then they die. After about 3 days you'll notice they've stopped. Then they'll probably start again. This usually takes about 3 rounds before they've all died or gotten the message to not return. This is toxic if ingested so make sure it is in a place that children & animals will not make contact.
