It's no secret that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A proper morning meal helps give our bodies the fuel we need to make it through a busy day. As essential as breakfast is for grown-ups, it is equally important for growing kids, too! Sure, there are tons of breakfast choices out there that cater to children. Many of these are sugar-laden, full of preservatives, and lure kids with fancy packaging and a toy buried deep within the box. I remember being tempted by these very foods when I was a kid!

There are many benefits to starting the day with breakfast. Not just any old breakfast, but from a nutrient rich breakfast. In countless studies dating all the way back to the 1950's, results have consistently shown that children who eat a well-balanced, complete breakfast perform better academically than children who regularly skip breakfast. When I was a teen, I frequently skipped breakfast. While I still did well in school, I did find that I got very tired and it was often difficult to concentrate throughout the day. That's why I make sure my kids get a better start to their day!

As a mom, I am concerned about making sure my kids get the proper nutrition. I realize that the sugary breakfasts of my childhood were anything but ideal. You see, not all breakfasts are created equal. Not by a long-shot! So in my home, we stay away from the sugary foods that are full of empty calories. I like fresh organic fruits, whole grains, and yogurt.

I start the day with something simple cottage cheese or a hard boiled egg. The kids on the other hand get what ever they want..fruit,oatmeal cereal (none with excess suger)

we usually start the day with both kids running and jumping on us when we are asleep :) but on school mornings which is only 2 days a week right now, we have to drag them out by their toes :)

I don't know that you'd call it healthy but it's better than nothing! :-) I drink a Herbalife shake with bananas, strawberries and whatever other berry is on sale or in season pretty much every morning except Sundays.

Steel cut oats with flax, weekends usually whole grain waffles or pancakes- vegan and COFFEE!!! My oldest (4) usually starts with cereal but sometimes we do crackers, cheese and grapes for a breakfast picnic. My 6 month old does the Earths Best rice cereal :)
