Family movie night can be a bit tricky in my home. You see, I have 2 toddlers and a teenager, and their tastes definitely tend to clash. My teen doesn't have the slightest bit of interest in Disney princesses or Winnie the Pooh, and the munchkins don't want to watch scary movies and thrillers. Often it's a battle just deciding what we can all enjoy as a family without constant complaints. So of course when I was offered the opportunity to review the film, "Horrid Henry", I readily agreed. I have heard of the series of books by renowned British author Francesca Simon, and I knew they would be right up my teen's alley, but would have enough silliness to keep the toddlers entertained, too. We received an awesome package of fun things to get our Horrid Henry movie night underway. Not only did we receive the DVD, which just happened to be encased in a Walmart exclusive Slime Pack that the kids ooh-ed and ahh-ed over, we also received one of the books, as well as some fun gag items and novelties. My 13 year old was incredibly amused by the joy buzzer especially! Before we settled in to watch the movie, I made some delicious hummus and grilled up some pita bread to accompany it. Much better and more filling than popcorn, in my opinion, and the kiddos gobble it up! Then I gathered my family together to watch the movie. Here are my 3 kids in a rare moment of calm. Guess they knew something awesome was about to happen and they were going to laugh their little butts off for the next hour or so! Our Thoughts About Horrid Henry : Plot synopsis: When Henry fails yet again to hand in his homework for the umpteenth time, he inadvertently sets off an unexpected and curious chain of events. He forms an unlikely alliance with Moody Margaret, the infuriating girl next door, outwits corrupt School Inspectors, topples an evil Headmaster, wins a talent contest, and stands up to his ultimate nemesis. With each antic crazier than the last, Henry finds himself inexplicably trying to save the very school which he has always professed to hate. My kids absolutely loved this movie! It was fast-paced and full of slap-stick humor that kids tend to react to. (Yes, this includes getting slimed, nose-picking, etc.) There are loads of funny jokes and visually humorous scenes, but there is also a strong positive message as well. As Henry tries to help save his school, he learns valuable lessons about friendship and never giving up on a dream. So yeah, the kids will be amused by the mischief and antics, but they will actually get a lesson in character in the long run. I thought the movie was cute, but definitely more geared towards kids. I love the fact that Horrid Henry features an all-star cast, and I think Angelica Huston made for the perfect spinster teacher. There were plenty of moments where my husband and I were giggling right along with the kids! I would definitely recommend Horrid Henry for anyone looking for a fun, fresh movie to watch on Family Movie Night. Phase 4 Films did a great job creating a movie that is engaging and sure to delight people of all ages.
