We've been in our new home in Ohio for just over a week now. I wish I could say we're unpacked and settled in....I wish I could say I knew where everything went and everything was tidily in its place. I wish I could say I even knew where my razors were so I could rid my legs of their annoying stubble. In reality, we're still surrounded by piles and piles of boxes. Some are opened, waiting to be put away, while others are yet to be touched. None of my house LOOKS like a home yet. It looks more like a big storage unit! The worst part? None of the boxes are organized. They just don't make sense. Kitchenwares mixed with clothing and baby toys? Yep, the husband packed most of our things. No labels. No organization. Just random things placed in boxes. I am so thankful we own our home and will not have to move for a long, long time. It has been really overwhelming trying to make sense of everything while taking care of 2 toddlers, trying to get my 12 year old to help, and now chasing THREE dogs around. (That's another post entirely!) Add to that trying to cook when I can't find half of my things, trying to clean up the many, many messes my kids make in a day, and trying to make the time to blog? I have to admit, I am more than a little bit stressed out and exhausted. But everyday, I get something accomplished. I am trying to celebrate the small victories, such as locating my favorite pair of shorts or figuring out how to use the washer and dryer that are hooked up in our basement. After all, I should be happy right now, so I am trying to focus on the good things rather than drown in the 5 billion things that still need to get done. There are a ton of great things, too...We're finally back in Ohio, in my wonderful hometown, we fully own our own home with no mortgage payments, and we're close to tons of family. But we still have a LONG way to go before our house looks and truly feels like a home. Here's where we stand today. Like I said, it's not pretty.... There's still so much left to do, as you can see! I will be featuring tons of must-have products and home services over the next many months in an ongoing series "Home Sweet Home." Keep your eyes open for these reviews, decor ideas, and some amazing giveaways, too! To kick this off in style, I would love to offer one lucky reader a great prize pack to help their home shine. Included in this prize package are: (2) 22oz Banana Nut Bread Yankee Candles. Yep, these are the HUGE ones! And this scent is amazing. It makes the house smell like you've been baking all day. We had a moving van and told them not to arrive on a Sunday because the bank wouldn't be open and we would have to pay them on Monday. When did they arrive? You guessed it on Sunday! They stayed over in a motel and we paid them the next day! What a hassle.

My horror story is when we moved to another state and put everything in storage when we arrived there. We could not find our padlock so we ran to buy one. When we returned, we realized that someone had opened out unit and stole everything at the front of it. When only stayed in that state for 2 years before moving again (thank goodness!)

We moved into our home 2 weeks before Christmas. It will be 9 years this year. Anyway, our boys were 3 and 4 so Christmas was the most important thing for me. Before we even moved in all our stuff, we came over to the house and put up the tree with the boys. I didn't want that to be overwhelming with all the other stuff to put away once we moved in. So, the tree was up and decorated and lighted and waiting for us when we moved in. That made Christmas and the move that much more stress-free for me!

Designate 1 or 2 boxes with DO NOT LOSE. Put absolute essentials in these boxes, like medicines, prescriptions, birth certificates, extra pair of glasses, school records, and the like. Mark in BRIGHT BOLD letters. That way, no matter what, you can take care of business, no matter how much you have unpacked at your new home. You may even take this in the car with you to your new home, to make sure it is safe.

When my husband and I moved to Las Vegas from Michigan a few years back, we had to throw away our brand new mattress. We were moving it from storage to our rental truck at another location in an open cab pickup truck. It started to rain/snow mix, and even after airing it out, the mattress would NOT dry. Turn all the hangers one way in your closet, then as you wear things and put them back, put those hangers back the opposite way. After a while you will quickly learn what pieces you do not wear as the hangers will remain in their original position, then you can get rid of those items knowing that you probably won't wear them again.

If you know that there are boxes you want to be able to locate right away make sure you mark them with star or something you will recognize...When packing anything fragile make sure to use lots of paper to wrap and pack on end, NEVER flat!!

My organizational/cleaning tip is to start with one room and go from top to bottom cleaning and then organizing, finishing it completely before starting on the next room. From my experience, and especially owning a cleaning svc., if I were to clean little bits here and there and work all over the house, it would take me twice as long and make me feel like I wasn't getting anything accomplished. By completing one room at a time, preferably doing a deep clean, it will help you to feel like you are in control and making the most of your time and therefore keeping you motivated.

When I was first married, we were discharged from the Navy, and the military moved us to my husband's home of record. Since we were living in a mobile home, that meant moving the trailer. After some time, it did not arrive and was eventually found abandoned somewhere in Maryland. The driver had apparently been living in it and had left it somewhat in a mess. At least he hadn't gotten into our boxed personal possessions, aside from some kitchenware, but there were some repairs to be made. And to make it worse, the so-called 'moving insurance' that was provided certainly did not pay enough to come anywhere near the costs of the repairs! Future moves had their problems (although we never had to move a trailer again!), but nothing like that first one.

We got a great deal on a dream house from a bank with one nonnegotiable requirement - closing in 30 days, that wasn't the problem - we still had to sell our current house and we got our sale closed within 3 MONTHS of closing on our purchase! God was looking out for us! It was nerve-wracking until we received our first reasonable offer. The other thing that caused major headaches was emptying the first house of personal items and extra furniture ASAP so we could schedule showings ASAP (I am almost a packrat).

The first time I was moved I was young and single and I gave almost everything away and took only bare necessities, and what fit in my little, bitty car. The next time we move will be similar in quantity of stuff, going from a house into a small retirement condo and will take very little to the new place, just the couch and bedroom set and very little more.

A tip for staying organized that I like to use is to always put things away immediately and never wait until later. Later may not come in a timely manner. :)

We just moved and I was really happy that I did the decorating soon after the last box was unpacked...made the place feel much more homey. If I hadn't, then I probably would have let it go for too long.

Take it one room at a time instead of trying to get little bits done in each room throughout the day or week

A wicker cutlery tray placed on top of a bookcase or console table in the entry, makes the perfect catchall for cell phones, keys, and other small items.

I have another tip! Is there anyone who can keep the kids entertained while you are organizing? Like a teenager (mommy's helper). That way the kids are home and feel like they are part of it, but someone is there to distract them when they need distracting.

We moved across the country and had a company move our stuff for us. They ended up holding it hostage at the other end until we paid them more than we had originally agreed to. We had to get the police involved and it was the suckiest time ever. I was 7 months pregnant and sleeping on the floor because we had nothing at our new home.

I just moved, and it is a lot of work, the only advice I could give is to make sure you get a lot of sleep the night before you move!!

Congrats on not having a mortgage! Bins and baskets for everything will help keep things organized-especially under sinks and in the pantry. Good luck!

A tray, filled with glass pebbles or rocks, allows mud or snow to drain from your boots and shoes, preventing them from sitting in a puddle.

Taking a little extra time while packing to pre-sort items saves a lot of headache when unpacking - especially if you're getting help, because you can more easily direct which drawers/cabinets/closets things should be put in without micromanaging.

When the kids were young we sold our home and bought a new one in three weeks. We moved in on Dec 15. By Christmas we had the house decorated and the tree up. (I was a Zombie for a month after!)

We use milk crates stacked and filled with products. Like a personal store. When we run out of an item,we replace it and know to re-stock the shelf.

Label your boxes REALLY clearly. Don't just write "Kitchen" - put Kitchen: can opener, silverware, knives, spices. Or whatever :) Thing is when you're looking for the can opener or your razor in those first few days you won't have to root around in half a dozen boxes.
