![]() Before Halloween, I shared about how Goosebumps by RL Stine has been a spooky household name for 20 years. That's 2 decades! I also shared how giving the gift of Goosebumps books, DVDs and games was a great alternative to sugary candy and other treats. Well, due to the hurricane known as Frankenstorm, AKA Sandy, I wasn't able to get my review and giveaway up before Halloween. (I'm sorry!) But that's okay, because these would make a fantastic Holiday gift for kids that enjoy things that go bump in the night. My soon to be 13 year old, Kyle, is obsessed with anything horror related. He loves scary movies and books, and he even wants to be a real-life Paranormal Investigator someday. So I knew he'd be thrilled to receive a 2-DVD Goosebumps SpookPack and the Goosebumps Horrorland video game for the Wii. These are right up his alley, and are the perfect Holiday gift for a kid his age! In order to keep it a surprise, my husband and I watched the DVD and played the Wii game. Yep, Kyle has no idea that they're here! The DVD has 2 features, "One Day At Horrorland" and "Go Eat Worms." As you can imagine, the tales were spooky and featured kids having haunted, sometimes gross adventures.(Worms...Ewww!) While the DVD has a ghoulishly haunted feel, there is no foul language, nudity, or extreme gore. It's geared towards kids, so there isn't anything they couldn't handle or would be traumatized by. I think it's safe to say that Kyle is going to LOVE this!
My husband is a big kid himself, so he was more than happy to test out the Goosebumps Horrorland game for the Wii. This game is pretty neat and has several different play modes. You can choose the Story Mode, which has more of a plot, or play Arcade Mode for some fast-paced action. This game can be played by a single player or can be played as a group, making it perfect for sleepovers! The game is set in Horrorland, a creepy amusement park, and a group of friends are trapped there and trying to escape. The graphics are fairly decent, but aren't as crisp as some found on more adult games on platforms like the PS3 or XBOX 360. For a Wii game that's geared towards a younger audience, I would say the graphics are done very well. They're creepy but not overly scary. No worried about bad dreams! You must complete several challenging levels in order to be freed from the evil park. The games and challenges aren't as easy as they appear. Quick thinking and good hand-eye coordination are definitely a necessity. My husband thought that while the game is tons of fun, it's definitely suited to kids between the ages of around 6-16. So it covers a pretty broad age range! Overall, we were pretty impressed by both the DVD's and the Horrorland Wii game. These are wonderful representations of the Goosebumps legacy, and are a lot of fun for kids of varying ages. I think these would be a fantastic way to introduce reluctant readers to the best-selling RL Stine series. After seeing the movies and playing the game, they're bound to want to read some of the many, many books! My daughter loves watching Goosebumps. She set them to record and then watching them during tv time. The one about the scarry knomes has completly freaked me out. Anytime we go through the lawn and garden section my daughter will tease me about the knome garden statues.
