![]() In my house, like many others, one of our favorite ways to unwind after a long day is to relax together while sipping on some exceptional wines. And maybe nibble on some cheese, or in my husband's case, chocolates. Of course since we have 2 very unpredictable toddlers in the house, we don't get to indulge in this very often. There's always someone waking up and wanting to play, or bad dreams that demand snuggle time. So when Dan and I get the chance to enjoy our wine, we truly do savor the experience. Dan likes drier, more bitter whites. His favorites are Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. I am a bit more versatile, and enjoy both reds and whites. My favorites are sweeter, more fruity wines, like a nice Moscato. Either way, we're both very open to trying new wines, and we love going to vineyards for wine tastings and live music whenever we get the chance. So recently, when I received the opportunity to review the selections of wine from the California Wine Club, I jumped at the chance. This is a very unique service that offers wine lovers the chance to sample a huge selection of wines on a monthly basis. These wines come straight from smaller, lesser known wineries in the beautiful state of California! I don't know if you're aware, but smaller vineyards often produce superior wines. When you take a sip, you'll be discovering a local treasure full of flavor and cultural depth. Here is a bit more about California Wine Club, from the owner, Bruce Boring: For years Pam and I were frustrated trying to find truly great wine. Selecting a decent bottle of wine from thousands of pretty labels with prices ranging from $5-$35 was difficult at the best of times. We were always happiest with wine recommendations from friends. So, that's what we wanted to do with The California Wine Club, start a wine of the month club that was just like "one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend". We are now celebrating 20 years of business and the wine adventures keep getting better! Pam and I knew that there were hundreds of small, family-owned wineries dedicated to producing exceptional wine ... and it was this wine that we wanted to share with our monthly wine club members. Each month we travel California's wine country searching out the wineries, meeting the families and tasting the wines that never make it to local stores or wine shops. This is why it was so easy to guarantee that our wine of the month club members and gift recipients will never receive any bulk, closeout or private label wines...ever. Each and every wine we select comes from a real working winery and is backed by our 100% guarantee. With four wine of the month clubs to choose from, we have wine selections and wine gifts to suit all tastes and all budgets. To learn more click any of the following links:
The California Wine Club is a different kind of wine of the month club...a difference you'll taste with your first shipment! The awesome folks at California Wine Club are sending me a 2 month subscription to try for myself! In our November shipment, we received 2 bottles of wine that originated at the Robeldo Family Winery, located in Napa Valley. We received a 2008 Sauvignon Blanc (white) and a 2009 Tempranillo (red). Just as I suspected, we opened the Sauvignon Blanc first. My husband is so predictable at times! This wine has aromas of Honeysuckle and Mango, with notes of citrus, green tea, and lemongrass, making this a very unique, complex wine. We noticed that the wine had very nice legs, and the aroma was mouthwatering and inviting. The flavors meld together wonderfully, leaving just a hint of citrus on the palate. We both really enjoyed this wine, my husband especially. It was definitely different than other Sauvignon Blancs we have tried in the past, and has a very unique and delightful flavor. This wine is best paired with oysters, a light salad, or ceviche, and makes a terrific palate-cleanser between courses. The next wine we tried was the Tempranillo. This is a type of wine I had never heard of before, so I was very excited to try it! Tempranillo has a bright ruby color with heavy aromas of cranberry, blackberry, cinnamon, spice and toasted oak. The flavors of dried black fruit, toasted cedar and tobacco mingle with great acidity and strong tannins to produce a long, rich finish.
Dan didn't care for this wine, but he generally doesn't enjoy reds. I, on the other hand, LOVED it. This wine has a deep, fruity, almost smoky flavor that is very complex. It lingers on the palate, and complements spicy foods very well. I drank this wine with some Carne Asada, and it was amazing! This wine is best paired withSeafood paella, grilled vegetables or chicken enchiladas. Overall, we were surprised and delighted with our first California Wine Club shipment. The wines were unique and flavorful, and a true step above wines you'll find at your local grocery stores. It is evident that the Boring family puts a great deal of time and effort into finding wines that really stand out. I can't wait to see what December's shipment brings!
