(And there is nothing worse than feeling your tummy growl when you're trying to run errands, especially with kids in tow!) I am one of those weird people that actually reads the nutrition facts of food I eat, and a lot of fast food is horrifyingly high in calories, sodium, and fat. So when we get hungry on the go, I try and go to places that have healthier menu items, like salads, grilled chicken, and fresh fruit. So when I learned about the new summer menu options at Wendy's, I did a little research and decided I'd like to try them out! In comparison to typical fast food meals like burgers, Wendy's has some very sensible choices that I don't need to feel guilty about choosing for my family. For example, their large sized Berry Almond Chicken Salad is under 500 calories, loaded with fresh strawberries and blueberries which are rich in antioxidants, and has 11 different kinds of freshly chopped field greens. Add tender grilled chicken, thinly shaved Asiago cheese, and slivered almonds, and you've got an amazing, delicious meal option that is kinder to the waistline. You can even use less of the Fat Free Raspberry Vinaigrette to further cut calories, or choose the half-sized version which contains only 270 calories! There are also new kids' meal options, like the Grilled Chicken Go Wrap with Apple Slices as a side. This is a wonderful option, since it's loaded with protein, low in calories, and is super fresh. My kids love anything in a tortilla, so I knew we'd have to give this a shot. So of course, when we were out getting groceries and other household items, we decided to grab some Wendy's on the way home, since we were all pretty hungry. We just hit the drive-through, since Xander was fast asleep in his car seat. We know better than to wake up a sleeping 2 year old! While we opted not to dine in this time, I do have to say that the interior of our local Wendy's is always clean, bright, cheerful, and the employees always seem to be friendly. Of course choosing our meals was a bit hard. Wendy's has so many delicious options! I chose a Chicken Go Wrap and a half-sized Berry Almond Chicken Salad. The little ones got Chicken Go Wrap kids' meals, my 13 year old wanted a full sized Berry Almond Chicken Salad, which he was drooling over the whole time we waited. My husband....well...He doesn't care about the more sensible options and got a Baconator meal. (Let's face it...These things are YUMMY, so I can't blame him one bit!) We received our food rather quickly, and it was still nice and fresh by the time we got home. Our wraps and my husband's Baconator were still nice and hot, and the salads were cool and crisp. I was very impressed by the Berry Almond Chicken Salad. I have never been brave enough to try a salad with fruit in it, since I always assumed it just wouldn't work, flavor wise. Boy, was I wrong! The fresh, plump blueberries, sweet strawberries, and crisp greens went beautifully with the tender grilled chicken and Asiago cheese. The almonds, which are lightly seasoned with sea salt, gave just the right amount of crunch and contrasted the sweetness of the fruit very well. I also love the Fat Free Raspberry Vinaigrette, which is made with acai juice. It has the perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess, and I think I detected a hint of balsamic vinegar in the dressing. I am a HUGE fan of balsamic, and use it in so many of my own dishes at home. Overall, this is one amazing salad, and very filling! Kyle liked it, too, and was surprisingly able to finish his large sized salad with no issue at all. The little ones got the Chicken Go Wrap Kids' meals. We chose chocolate milk and apple slices to accompany the entree. The Grilled Chicken Go Wraps are very yummy, according to my 3 year old, Sophie. These are made with tender grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce, and a smoky honey mustard, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. My toddlers gobbled them up happily, along with the fresh apple slices. Well, I don't think I need to get into how delicious my husband's Baconator was. It's smothered in bacon and cheese and just looked amazing. Since I am watching my weight, I didn't order one for myself. (But oh, how I wanted to!) Overall, we were very happy with our experience with the new summer menu at Wendy's. Our salads were absolutely fantastic, filling, and super fresh. And I love the sensible kids' meal choices that Wendy's has to offer, too. My kids got to feel like they had a treat, and I wasn't consumed by Mommy Guilt! It's a win-win situation all around, if you ask me! Next time, we will have to try one of their new Frosty Cones! Connect With Wendy's :
