So I have been trying a lot of different workout DVDs lately. Let's face it: With 2 toddlers to care for, I can't really get to the gym conveniently or consistently. A few I have tried felt like boot camp, and were nothing short of torturous. Let's just say they landed right back on the shelf and probably won't get used again any time soon. Not that they were bad workouts, but they definitely weren't "beginner-friendly".
Recently, I got the opportunity to try a Bollywood-inspired workout routine called Doonya. I have always heard that this style of workout does wonders for the core, especially the tummy area. My biggest body complaint just happens to be my stomach. I hate it so much that I won't even allow my husband to touch it. I have had 3 c-sections, 2 of which were a mere 12 months apart, and a woman's body doesn't just bounce right back after that. So I figured Doonya was definitely worth a try!
About Doonya :
From renowned dance-based fitness studios, Doonya, comes the latest high-energy DVD series, “Doonya: The Bollywood Dance Workout,” available today. This cardio-dance and strength-building at-home program, perfectly choreographed to songs from Bollywood, features routines created by the founders of Doonya, Priya Pandya and Kajal Desai, previously available only at select studios.
“Doonya exercises the body and mind through the exciting rhythms of Bollywood dance,” says Kajal Desai, co-founder of Doonya. “It is an all-encompassing feel-good program that embraces music, fitness and a healthy lifestyle.”
In the DVD series, Priya and Kajal showcase the sweat-inducing moves that blend four quintessential Bollywood styles of dance to tone and sculpt abs, glutes and legs.
"Bollywood is India's film industry where the stars sing, dance and act out their imagination," said Priya Pandya, co-founder of Doonya. “It’s over-the-top fun and a perfect way to actually enjoy working out. While doing Doonya routines, you forget about everything else and realize you too can dance, act and live out your inner Bollywood!”
The three-disc series is as follows:
DISC ONE - “Beginner Breakdown: How to Bollywood Dance” concentrates on the fundamentals with a 20-minute breakdown of Doonya’s signature steps. As a bonus, this disc also demonstrates Bollywood choreography in a full performance.
DISC TWO- “Cardio Dance & Conditioning: Transform Your Body and Mind through Dance Fitness” is a full 60-minute Doonya class that includes a warm-up, basics drill, 11 targeted routines and a brisk cool down.
DISC THREE - “Abs, Glutes, & Cardio: Express Workouts for Sculpting & Weight Loss” offers express workouts for busy schedules with quick workouts such as 10-minute abs, 12-minute glutes and 16-minute cardio.
My Opinion of Doonya :
After I felt somewhat comfortable with the moves, I moved on to the 2nd DVD, "Cardio Dance & Conditioning: Transform Your Body and Mind through Dance Fitness”. This DVD started with a warm-up and moved into a rather intense workout routine. (Or maybe I found it intense because I am not used to it?) It did make me sweat, but I was having fun as well. And I discovered muscles I didn't even know I had in the process! Thankfully, there was a relaxing cool down at the end that allowed me to bring both my mind and body to a slow and steady pace.
The final DVD is geared specifically towards weight loss and body transformation. This is the DVD I have been using the most. I especially love the fact that it can be broken down into several quick routines. As a busy mom, I don't always have a full hour to devote to anything other than the kids. With this DVD, I can get a good workout in less than 20 minutes. And yes, it truly is a workout! You will get your heart rate up and break a sweat, but you'll have fun at the same time.
Overall, I am really enjoying the Doonya workout. In just a couple of weeks' time, I have lost an inch and a half from my waist. I don't weigh myself much anymore because as an eating disorder survivor, the scale is my arch nemesis, but I do feel a difference in the way my clothing is fitting. It might be my imagination, but my butt seems to feel a bit firmer, too. And I feel better, all around. I am gaining confidence I didn't even know I had, and I am finally getting fit. Sure, it will take time, but the Doonya routine is so much fun that I actually look forward to my workout time. That, in itself, speaks volumes coming from someone who usually hates exercise. I would definitely recommend this program to any ladies out there that want to get fit, healthy, and bring out the Bollywood dancer within!
