***Disclosure: I received complimentary samples to facilitate my review. No other compensation has been provided, and all opinions are 100% honest and have not been influenced in any way.*** My kids are very interested in the world around them....and beyond. I can't say I blame my littles for being fascinated by outer space. We have a nice telescope, and on clear nights, we love heading out onto the deck to see what constellations we might find. Sometimes, we get lucky and catch a glimpse of Venus. Imagine the look on my 4 year old's face when I told her that planets can look like SUPER bright stars in the sky, since they're so far away from the Earth. They keep hoping that they will see some bona-fide alien life, but I'm not holding my breath. Our telescope isn't THAT fancy! Anyway, recently we discovered Space Scouts, a monthly subscription service for kids who are into learning about the cosmos. The first month, your child will receive an adorable, lunch-box style carrying case. This is where they will store their activities that arrive in subsequent months. (Yes, everything stays organized. Space Scouts earns some MAJOR brownie points here!) About Space Scouts : “ROXY and JETT will guide your child on a scouting expedition through the solar system, with focus on a specific place in space each month. Each monthly packet will include a Space Scouts exploration plan describing the place to be scouted, a Space Scouts magnet to add to the Space Scouts lunchbox, a Space Scouts sticker to add to the Space Scouts solar system poster, a Space Scouts activity sheet loaded with puzzles, games, and activities, a Space Scouts sticker scramble (unscramble the numbered stickers to reveal a surprise!), a Space Scouts souvenir toy to use in learning activities, a Space Scouts constellation card, and a Space Scouts constellation activity sheet that includes the mythological stories and other learning activities to help your child identify the constellation in the night sky.” Every month brings new adventures with Space Scouts. Each month, your child will receive a new exploration plan. These kits contain the following products:
As a parent, I really appreciate how each month ties into the next. For example, you add constellation cards to a metal ring. This is very handy, and your child will end up with a great constellation guide that they can take anywhere! We also love the activities. The Sticker Scramble was tons of fun for my 4 year old daughter, but my 3 year old had some trouble with it while working independently. (This was to be expected, though. With some adult supervision and help from his sister, he did just fine.) But our favorite part? Well, in addition to all the fun facts about space, the kids REALLY loved the solar system poster, mini astronauts, and the "grabber". (It's a claw-type toy that can grasp objects.) We have made up our own little game to supplement the activities that are in included in the Space Scouts kits. Sophie and Xander place the little astronaut figures onto the solar system map. Then, they pretend that the astronauts have been stranded on distant planets. Once they identify the planets that the space travelers are stuck on, they use the claw-like "grabber" to rescue them. This keeps them busy for HOURS, and it's so cute to hear their make-believe space rescue story come to life! Overall, we're pretty impressed with Space Scouts. This monthly subscription service teaches children about the wonders of the universe in fun, hands-on ways that kids seem to love. I appreciate all the info given, as well as the fact that these kits allow for not only learning, but creative play. If your little one is interested in stars, planets, and space travel, this unique service might just be the perfect Holiday gift!
