Having two babies well under the age of 2 can be quite the adventure. There are always adoring smiles, big hugs, baby kisses, and plenty of fun to brighten every day. But along with the fun of having two babies comes other realities, like bottles to be made, baths to give, meals to prepare, and dirty diapers to change. And with dirty diapers comes rashes. Luckily, in my home they are few and far between. I use protecting creams with most diaper changes, especially at night, in order to prevent the painful, red rashes that are so common during infancy. Diaper rashes can emerge for a variety of reasons. If a child has been in a soiled diaper too long, such as overnight, sometimes they will wake up with irritation since the warm, damp environment is a breeding ground for bacteria. Yuck!
Other rash-inducing factors include dietary changes, warm weather and humidity, illness, antibiotics and even allergies to soaps and detergents! I know when we first introduced both Xander and Sophie to solids, they got diaper rashes since their little bums weren't used to the different kind of poop they were suddenly producing. We have also had rashes crop up after switching to different detergents for our cloth diapers, as well as when using disposable diapers when traveling or leaving kids with sitters that would rather not deal with cloth.
So as you can see, the occasional diaper rash is almost an inevitable occurrence at some point during a child's infant and toddler years. No matter how hard you try and prevent them with frequent diaper changes and allowing a baby's behind to "breathe" when possible, rashes happen, even if they are a rare occurrence.
I use cloth diapers a good 95% of the time. Since switching from disposables to cloth, I have noticed that rashes occur a lot less than when we used only disposable diapers. Probably because cloth diapers do not have all of the chemicals and fragrances commonly found in disposables. But we do still use disposables occasionally, especially during travel.
One thing I rely on to keep my babies rash-free and happy is a good, high-quality diaper rash cream. I have used many of them over the years, like Desitin and A&D, but I hated the smell of these products (can we say Dead Fish? Eww!) and found that while they worked alright, the relief wasn't as fast as I'd have preferred. Also, some of these creams were not easy to wipe off and left a persistent goo all over my babies, even after bathing sometimes! I know they're made to be moisture resistant and are a protective barrier, but being hard to remove just can't be a good thing! Diaper areas are incredibly prone to bacteria, and if you can't remove the diaper cream easily, I can only assume that this would provide such germs an additional breeding ground. NOT something I want in my babies' diapers, that's for sure!
So as far as diaper rash products, I have literally tried them all. My absolute, all time favorite? Boudreaux's Butt Paste! I first discovered their line of products when I was pregnant with Sophie, my toddler. I had seen Butt Paste on the store shelves before, but had never purchased it because it is a little more expensive than some of the other available products. I was actually given a tube of this as a baby shower gift, and I was immediately impressed. First of all, I LOVE the smell. A lot. As a matter of fact, if they came out with a Butt Paste scented body spray, I would buy it. I don't really know how to describe the scent, but it is very, very pleasant and light with a sweet, almost herbal feel to it. I am obsessed with products that smell good, both for me and for my babies, so the great smell roped me in right away....
But was it effective? YES! Very! Boudreaux's Butt Paste is nothing short of amazing. It goes on lightly and wipes off easily, and provides a soothing, protective barrier against irritants. Boudreaux's products are great for preventing rashes, but also provide rapid relief from an existing rash. When my babies have had rashes, I treat them with Boudreaux's and start seeing a noticeable improvement by the very next diaper change, overnight at the absolute latest.
Now since I am a cloth-diapering mama the vast majority of the time, I do have to use disposable liners when using most diaper rash creams. Boudreaux's Butt Paste is no exception. The ingredients in such products can cause repelling in cloth diapers and can be darn near impossible to get out! But I continue to use these products WITH LINERS, and take care in applying in such a way that the product does not come into direct contact with my diapers. I have not had any issues using this system, and my precious stash has remained unharmed. So while Butt Paste is NOT Cloth-Diaper friendly, you can use these products sparingly WITH a liner without issue.
Boudreaux's offers a HUGE variety of products, and I was recently lucky to try an assortment of them. They are all just as effective as my tried and true Original Butt Paste. I particularly like the Maximum Strength Butt Paste and the All Natural Butt Paste. But did you know that Butt Paste works wonders on other ailments, too? That's right! This stuff is great even outside of diapering! My 11 year old recently had some chafing on his thighs from being out in the hot weather, and I handed him a tube of Butt Paste to soothe it. He felt a little odd using a "diaper cream" on himself, but it worked! The next day, his irritation had reduced substantially! Butt Paste also works wonders on poison ivy, feminine irritation, heat rash, and even hemorrhoids!
They also have a Rash Protector that wonderful for rash prevention. Boudreaux's awesome line of products aren't only for rashes, though! The company also offers a fantastic Body Wash and Shampoo and even Baby Kisses, a lip balm made especially with the littlest of lips in mind! After all the hugs and kisses my babies get every day, and the amount of drooling and chewing they do,their cute little puckers need protection from chafing. Can you tell I love these products!? I HIGHLY recommend Bourdreaux's for all of your baby's needs. These products are highly effective, and worth the additional cost. After all, a happy baby is priceless!
