I have a good friend whose breastfed baby suffers from awful bouts of reflux. Her little girl would scream and scream with each and every feeding, and my friend was concerned that her little one wasn't getting enough food. What a scary thought! I know how this feels firsthand, as well. Both Sophie and Xander had reflux when they were smaller, and it is no picnic trying to soothe a baby with tummy troubles like that. I am an adult, and I have reflux issues, and it is incredibly painful for me at times. Just imagine what the discomfort of reflux must feel like for a tiny baby! This problem actually contributed greatly to my lack of success in breastfeeding. When Sophie was a newborn, she had such awful pain during and after feeding, that she just would not nurse. When her pediatrician diagnosed her with reflux, she told us to bottle feed and add a small amount of rice cereal to her bottles to help ease her discomfort and keep her food in her tummy where it belonged rather than all over the place...Including all over me! This worked like a charm, and my baby girl seemed much happier almost overnight. However, she then suffered from nipple confusion due to the vast difference between the boob and the bottle. Not only does a standard rubber nipple FEEL different to baby, it requires an entirely different sucking action than actual nursing, making it very easy for baby to get confused. This factor was a key contributer to my daughter's ultimate refusal of the boob. She got used to the bottle, and since it's "easier" to suckle on a standard rubber nipple, every attempt I made at nursing went totally out the window. Sure, I pumped my milk and she got it until she was 8 weeks old, but one of my biggest regrets was that she could not benefit from nursing even longer. With Xander, it was the same scenario...Baby had tummy troubles despite my own changes in diet, and we once again had to resort to the bottle. Yes, my children are thriving and perfectly healthy, even exclusively bottle-fed, but nursing was something I wanted desperately to succeed at, since as we all know, breast milk until at least 6 months of age is best for baby. I wish I had known about the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature bottle-feeding system then! This is a very unique bottle that works just like the breast, helping to eliminate nipple confusion. The extremely wide nipple is shaped just like a woman's nipple, and the "base" of this unique nipple is soft and flexes, making it feel eerily like a breast! I love how similar to breast-feeding these bottles are! I tried the Closer To Nature 9oz. bottles with Xander, my 4 month old, and it was clear that these worked just like nature. He "latched on" and his mouth covered a part of the wide nipple, similar to the way a nursing baby latches on and their mouths go around a mother's areola. This nipple literally flexed underneath his lips, the very way the soft tissue of a breast would. I noticed, too, that his sucking action was different than nursing from an ordinary bottle, making it just like breastfeeding!
I also love that these bottles are more compact, and have a very comfortable grip. They are shorter than your standard 9oz bottles, and wider. These bottles are very easy to store in a diaper bag, and don't take up much room at all! They are also very easy to clean. I was worried that they might be more difficult, due to the unique nipple shape, but this was not the case at all. I LOVE the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Bottles, and I now understand why moms worldwide have trusted Tommee Tippee as a leader in feeding accessories. I wish I had these wonderful bottles while my milk was still "in", as I could have seamlessly switched between feeding expressed milk with cereal added and breastfeeding. This is a wonderful product for moms whose babies have to be supplemented, and they will not "confuse" baby and interfere with nursing. This is also a GREAT option for moms who nurse but want to give Daddy bonding time with baby. Dads can feed baby using Closer To Nature bottles, too! I know my husband loves feeding our babies, and it's a wonderful way to promote a nurturing relationship between father and child, as well as give a tired mama a much needed break! This product gets an A++ from me, as I'm sure it will from you! And guess what? Me again, I was looking over ur page to follow u on FB, Twitter etc. came across ur pic and I must say, I got a little jealous, you are beautiful! You sure don't look like you could have a pre teen or even be old enough to be a mom! You should really consider becoming a model. I use to model when I was younger, but that was a long time ago. I use to be a scout for the John Casablancas modeling agency, and they would for sure sign u up! Just wanted to tell you that, but probably like me, you couldn't do it full force with children, but something too consider. :)
