Okay, you all know by now that I am a certified fluff addict. When we initially made the decision to switch to cloth diapers, it was out of financial necessity. We had just had our daughter, and 3 months later discovered we were pregnant again. Being a one income family, the cost of keeping two babies in disposable diapers would have been astronomical. A friend of mine introduced me to cloth, and at first, I was definitely a bit skeptical. I was worried that they would be gross, hard to clean, and would leak like crazy. I had visions of old-fashioned prefolds and squeaky rubber pants in my mind, and I was not very enthusiastic. Well, then my friend came to visit and I saw modern cloth in action for the very first time. I was shocked at how adorable cloth diapers are, as well as how very similar in appearance they are to their disposable counterparts. With so many vibrant colors, fun prints, and soft, plush fabrics, I fell in love right away, and decided to do a little more research about cloth. What I found was that I could not only save a TON of money over my babies' diapering careers, I was also doing a huge service to the environment by choosing this greener option. Did you know that disposable diapers can take up to 500 YEARS to biodegrade? Just imagine how many diapers there are worldwide just sitting in our already brimming landfills. Aside from that, disposable diapers contain a lot of nasty chemicals that can irritate a baby's delicate skin and cause rashes. Cloth is chemical free! Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of trying many different brands of cloth diapers. I have found many that I absolutely love, and some that I didn't have success with. One thing I have really loved have been slim-fitting, side-snapping diapers. A lot of diapers add quite a bit of bulk, making it difficult to fit certain clothing over. Usually, I don't really mind that, but when trying to fit a pair of jeans over a bulkier diaper, it just doesn't seem to work too well. That's why I was so excited to try out a BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper. First of all, BabyKicks is a trusted name in cloth diapers, and for good reason. BabyKicks has been dedicated to making the highest quality cloth diapers out of natural and organic materials since 2000. Parents around the world have fallen in love with the incredible quality, comfort and value of BabyKicks products. Another awesome BabyKicks fact: Over 90% of their diapers are made by hand just across the Potomac River from me in the beautiful state of Maryland! When I received my BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper for review, the first thing I noticed was how soft the outer fabric is. It has an almost silky feel to it that I just love. The inner of the diaper is very soft as well, and is made from luxurious 30% Certified Organic Cotton and 70% Rayon made from Bamboo. The material will remain soft, absorbent and silky wash after wash. The BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper also comes with a One Size Joey-Bunz insert. I LOVE this insert! They are super trim and incredibly absorbent. The Joey-Bunz inserts are made from six layers of absorbent natural hemp/certified organic cotton jersey that are only 1/8 of an inch thick and designed to be trim, absorbent and easy to use. Use one Joey-Bunz for daytime, two for nights, or three for a super-soaker and still have a trim fit. Gently contoured to be comfortable for baby. Joey-Bunz also make GREAT doublers or use them by themselves in a snug fitting wrap. Joey-Bunz are better than inserts made from man-made micro fibers because hemp is a natural product, grown without pesticides and not bleached, which is very harmful to the environment. Hemp also protects your baby because it is naturally anti-microbial. Another thing I love is the fleece leg gussets. You've heard me sing the praises of good gussets time and time again, since my Xander is notorious for producing some of the messiest blow-outs ever. Proper leg gussets are essential for keeping messes IN the diaper where they belong rather than all over everything else. But BabyKicks' leg gussets are extra special: They are made of a special fleece material and contain no PUL, which allows for even more air flow to help prevent rashes. The Soft fabric does not leave red marks on baby’s legs, but still protects against leaks and blow outs. The BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper also has a front pocket, which is awesome! This allows you to customize the absorbency of the diaper and also helps prevent the insert from creeping up and peeking out of the back of the diaper. Why does this matter? Well, to put it bluntly, if the insert sticks out of the back, there is a 99.9995% probability that you WILL get poop on the insert. YUCK! Front pockets allow your insert to stay away from the solids...Trust me here. If you've ever gotten poop on inserts, you know just how gross this can be! I also love the fact that the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper has convenient side snaps. This allows for a slimmer fit, and also allows you to customize the size of the diaper to achieve the perfect fit on babies of ALL sizes. That's right. BabyKicks will fit babies from 7lbs-40lbs, making this a great diaper from birth all the way to potty training! Side snaps are also a God-send in my home, since my active daughter cannot get the diaper off very easily. I can't put her in Aplix very often, as she will take them off and has literally flung poo across the room before. Needless to say, we're loving the side snaps here! Take a look at the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper! HOW DID THE DIAPER PERFORM? TEST BABY 1: SOPHIA 26lbs I tested the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper on my active toddler, Sophia, for both day and night time use. I have to say, I absolutely love this diaper on her! It is very slim fitting, and allows me to put her in jeans and leggings that some diapers have not been overly compatible with. Despite its ultra-trim design, there have been no red marks left on Sophie's chunky thighs. During the day, this diaper fared incredibly well. Sophie seemed to be very comfortable running and playing in this diaper, and she had a full range of movement in it. The diaper did not leak one bit, and contained messes extremely well, even with my crazy child twisting and climbing all over the place. The leg gussets definitely held everything in very well. The BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper did equally well for night time use. I have to admit, I was a bit worried that it might leak, since I used the one, slim insert. Sophie is a very heavy wetter, and I was expecting to find her in a puddle by morning. However, I was pleasantly surprised. She woke up with a diaper that had to weigh 5lbs, but the outside of the diaper as well as her clothing were totally dry. This was great, since I normally have to double up my inserts at night. Overall, I think the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper is great for even heavy-wetting, active toddlers, and can be used confidently for both day and night time. TEST BABY 2: XANDER 19.5 LBS As you can see, Xander is giving the BabyKicks 3g a thumbs-up as well. (How cute is that?!) I was able to get a perfect fit on him as well, and the diaper remained just as trim on him as it did on his big sister. Again, there were no red marks whatsoever on his legs. During the day, this diaper was fabulous. Xander is just beginning to crawl, and he also likes to scoot himself around. Sometimes, he scoots on his back. Well, this has meant disaster at times, as certain diapers can't hold in messes when he's literally smooshing them and scooting backwards. Yes, I have actually had to shampoo poop off of my carpet more than once due to this odd behavior of his! With the BabyKicks 3g, messes stayed in the diaper, thank goodness! No poop creeping out the back! At night, the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper is the bomb...Or maybe I should say it held IN the bomb! Xander tends to wake up poopy every single morning. And I don't mean nice, happy little turds. I mean nasty, mushy, explosive messes. There have been many, many mornings that he has had to get a bath right away because poop escaped his diaper onto his sleeper, up his back, and even down his thighs. Yuck! The BabyKicks 3g has been wonderful at holding in such messes, thanks to the great fit and the leg gussets that are worth their weight in gold! Overall, I think this diaper is wonderful! It held up well for both of my babies for day and night time use, and definitely kept messes in beautifully, even with heavy wetters (and one heavy pooper!) The design is trim, streamlined, and the fabrics used in this diaper are super soft. BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diapers are also available in a variety of fun, vibrant colors! I'd love to get the Brown and Orange one to pay homage to my Cleveland roots! And with a super-trim, ultra-absorbent organic hemp insert, this diaper is absolutely bullet-proof! I would definitely recommend the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper to anyone who wants a slim-fitting, poop-containing powerhouse of a diaper. Try one! I am willing to bet you'll be pleasantly surprised!
