While no one in my home has any apparent food allergies, I do try and incorporate allergy-friendly foods into our diets. You never know when an allergic reaction may crop up. This can happen out of the blue, and can be very dangerous. During playdates especially, I watch what I serve. You never know what other peoples' kids food tolerances are, and it's better to be safe than sorry. Therefore, I try and find kid-pleasing recipes that are compatible with all dietary needs. I also am trying to lose the last 20lbs of baby weight, so I am doing my best to eat as many gluten-free foods as possible. Carbs tend to be my worst enemy, and I have found that eating gluten-free alternatives don't cause me to balloon the way traditional products do. Of course my husband can eat a whole loaf of bread or a heaping plate of pasta and somehow not gain a single ounce. It must be a guy thing. (Yep, I am jealous!) That's why I was so excited to get the opportunity to review the great new cookbook from Kiwi Magazine. Allergy-Friendly Food for Families is the most trustworthy, comprehensive, practical, and kid-friendly collection of recipes that exists for the important and growing audience of allergy-aware families. Unlike other allergy cookbooks, this book covers not one or two allergens, but the five most common allergens in kids: wheat, dairy, eggs, nuts, and soy. Each of the 120 recipes is free of at least three of these allergens; most are free of all five. When parents are desperate for ideas for what to make for dinner (or lunch, or snack time), they want recipes from someone they trust, for food that tastes good, that doesn't require a lot of fancy ingredients, and that the whole family can eat. Allergy-Friendly Food for Families is the ultimate resource. From the three crucial mealtimes (breakfast, lunch, dinner) to the "fun" foods families can't live without (desserts, snacks, parties), parents are completely covered. Perhaps most importantly, all of these recipes are simple for parents to make. Recipes such as Carrot Cake Breakfast Cookies, Pear Yogurt Dunkers, Good-for-you Nachos, Polenta Mini Pizzas, Giant Cookie Cake, Veggie Bite Soup, and Cool Zucchini Noodles will make kids forget they have allergies. Parents will love the additional informational sections on spotting food allergies, stocking an allergy-free pantry, deciphering labels, and other frequently asked questions. The book is very well laid-out and has some awesome photos and even great tips for cooking with kids. Take a look! Over the past month, I have had the pleasure of trying a great number of these recipes with my family. I have made dishes for every meal. There are wonderful options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as some snacks and desserts. Some of our favorites include the Cheesy Stuffed Pizza Burgers, the Tomato and Grilled Cheese Soup, and the Pizza Pockets. These dishes are nutritious, tasty, and definite kid-pleasers. And let's face it: Kids are among the pickiest people on the planet! My kids happily gobbled everything up!
I love the variety of recipes found in Allergy-Friendly Food for Families from Kiwi Magazine. They're all simple to make, which is a plus for busy weeknights when you're short on time. They're also very deceiving in flavor. You'd never know you're eating something that is allergen-free. No need to eat a bland, flavorless diet when coping with common food allergies. Pick up this cookbook and find a whole new world of flavor, even with food allergies! BUY IT: You can purchase your own copy of this amazing cookbook on Amazon.
