Now that summer is finally here, a lot of folks are heading outdoors to enjoy some sun and fun. We're no exception. We actually spend the bulk of our free time enjoying the beautiful summer weather here in Northeast Ohio.
Of course there are days when the kids are "bored" and don't want to do the same old thing. I suppose I can't really blame them, though. While hanging out in the yard is fun, there's a whole world to explore and enjoy.
I would love to share a list of 5 things that your family can do this summer to enjoy the outdoors. These photos are things that we enjoy doing here in the Cleveland area. Be sure to google similar things and see what's available in your area! Remember, it's very important to stay hydrated during your outdoor adventures, so be sure to pack plenty of water!
1. Urban Exploration :
Some people hear the words "Big City" and immediately think of crime, congestion, and other negative things. I know Cleveland has a pretty bad rep. Sure, there are parts of the city I wouldn't dare venture into, but Cleveland has a lot of beauty and local flavor, too. This photo was taken close to the Playhouse Square Theater District in Downtown Cleveland. Lovely, isn't it? I am willing to bet that if you set out in your town, you might find some hidden gems, too!
2. Head to the Lake :
Sometimes the only thing needed for the perfect summer afternoon is Mother Nature. We like heading to Geneva on the Lake. This is a quaint little town right on Lake Erie. When heading to the lake, we like to take nature walks, go fishing, or just enjoy a picnic on the water. At many lakes, you can even rent a boat and take the family out on the water for the day. This is always a great way to relax and enjoy some quality time as a family.
3. Make a SPLASH at the Pool Or Water Park :
Many communities have pools or even water parks that families can enjoy during the warmer months. We have a great park with pools, slides, and even a Lazy River to float along on. These make fantastic "Staycations", and what kid doesn't like splashing and getting wet? Why head all the way to the theme parks when there's surf and sun right in your own neck of the woods?
3. Seek Out Local Festivals :
Here in my town, we have loads of community events and festivals at the riverfront. Whether it's live music nights or full-blown festivals complete with carnival games and funnel cakes, there's always fun to be had in my community. Be sure to check the web to see what local events you may have coming up in your area.
4. Get Your Engines Running at Car Shows :
One thing my husband always looks forward to in the summer is heading to check out the classics at local car shows. These events are family-friendly and often have free admission. Many even have kids' activities and food vendors. Going to car shows is a perfect way to meet new people who share an appreciation for automobiles, the men, especially!
