5 All Natural Ways to Cope with Mommy Stress Plus RESCUE #STRESSLESS2BMYBEST Sweepstakes #AD4/12/2015 ***Disclosure: This blog post is part of a paid SocialMoms and RESCUE
See that adorable, Sharpie covered face? That is my Xander, AKA Satan's Spawn. Okay, that's a bit harsh a comparison, but this little guy definitely has his moments, and definitely keeps me on my toes. This picture, for example, was taken about an hour before we had to leave the house to travel to a large family reunion. And of course, it's permanent. I was rushing around like a crazy person, trying to make sure everyone was bathed, dressed, fed, etc, and my little Xander-Bander was decorating his face. I saw it, and I panicked. We were able to remove it and make it to the reunion in time, although just barely. And of course, we got a good laugh out of it later on, once his face was clean.
Sometimes it the little, unexpected surprises like this that really trigger a case of "Mommy Stress". I'm sure you mamas can relate, right? Well, I have a triple dose of parental stress. Xander is a handful all on his own. Add to that a little girl who is 5 going on 25 and a moody, dramatic 15 year old, and it's amazing that my hair isn't completely gray. Of course, I would never trade a single moment, since these 3 blessings are what makes my life worth living, all said and done. Some days are harder than others, so I have pretty much mastered the art of coping with stress safely, effectively, and naturally. I don't like the idea of taking prescribed meds, and I have found that my methods also bring tons of enjoyment to life, stressed out or not! I'd love to share my Top 5 Natural Stress Relief Methods with you now.
1. Head outdoors!
After a long, frigid winter, Cabin Fever definitely made an appearance in my house. Now that spring is finally, officially here, I have found that something as simple as stepping outside onto my deck for a few minutes, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine, can help reduce my stress level in mere minutes.
2. When feeling rushed or stressed, RELAX for a few.
One of the things that makes me feel the most stressed is feeling rushed. Whether I worry about being late for a function or event or stress myself out over looming deadlines, the feeling of running out of time causes me great anxiety. When I feel my heart start to rush and the worrying starting, I try and find a seat. I sit down, kick up my feet, and just relax for a few minutes. Once I have gained control over the initial pangs of anxiety, I resume my activities, making a conscious effort to keep a slower but steady pace.
3. Embrace your Inner Hippie and Meditate :
As someone who suffers from anxiety and a self-proclaimed "Modern Day Hippie", I definitely believe in the power of meditation. And yes, I own several Buddhas, tie-dyed clothing, and I drool over furniture made from reclaimed wood from the Amazon rainforest. Oh, and I love bands like "The Band", "The Doors", "The Beatles", and Bob Marley. Don't judge. Anyway, when I feel myself becoming overwhelmed by the demands of everyday life, I like to find a quiet place to sit by myself, so I can listen to soothing music and meditate. Sometimes I meditate in hopes of calmness, sometimes it's to draw positive energy my way, sometimes it's to free myself of negativity. There are tons of different ways to meditate, so I encourage you to experiment and find a method that works for you. Yep. I said I was a hippie.
4. Find the humor in everything. (Yes, this can be done.)
I'm not gonna lie, some days are pretty rough. There are days when if I didn't find something to laugh about, I would cry. Literally. Usually, these days start with discovering we're out of coffee creamer, followed by Xander trying to kill Sophie or vice versa, and topped off by stepping on a LEGO or into a still warm pile of Yorkie poop. (Hey, Trouble is a little dog. Sometimes, she has accidents.)
When Dan and I are having one of those days, and nothing seems to make anyone happy, we try and do something goofy to improve the mood in our house. For example, Dan put on the get-up seen above one day when Sophie and Xander were fighting like cats and dogs over a Nintendo 3DS game. The fighting immediately ceased, and screaming was replaced by giggles. Laughter works wonders to turn a stressful situation around in no time flat. Plus, your kids will think you're cool. Added bonus.
