One of the most important lessons for a child to learn is to dream big, conquer their fears, and reach for the stars. As a little person in a great big world, this can be a daunting, often intimidating task! New experiences can be scary. After all, there are so many new things to learn and see, new people to meet, and new challenges to undertake in life. This can often make a child (or adult, for that matter) feel a little less than confident. That's why I was so happy to receive the opportunity to review a brand new children's book by Olympic Gold Medalist, Kristi Yamaguchi. "It's a Big World, Little Pig" tells the heartwarming story of Poppy, a little pig with big dreams. Poppy wants to be a famous figure skater. She works very hard at reaching her goals, and travels to Paris to compete in the World Games. At first, Poppy is nervous about meeting so many new people in a new place. But, ever courageous and supported by her family (and best friend Emma, too!), Poppy begins to realize that although these animals look different, act different, and are from different places, they are all the same at heart. They all smile in the same language! This story is a wonderful way to teach kids that if they believe in themselves and face their fears, they're certain to come out on top. Poppy, Emma, and all of the other characters in the book are cute, lovable, and relatable. I love how the pictures help bring Poppy's adventure to life in an almost magical way. I have read this story to my daughter several times now, and she absolutely loves the bright, cheerful illustrations in the book. Take a look at how cute this is! One of the other things I appreciate the most is that It's a Big World, Little Pig celebrates diversity. In this story, Poppy meets several animals from around the world. While this is intimidating to her at first, she quickly learns that no matter what someone looks like or what language they speak, everyone really is the same on the inside. The book even teaches kids a few words in other languages!
I would definitely recommend this fun story to anyone out there with big dreams. This book is well-written, beautifully illustrated, and is sure to become a fast favorite. My daughter loves It's a Big World, Little Pig, and hopefully this story will help her to face her fears and gain confidence as she grows and develops dreams of her own! It's a Big World, Little Pig will be available on March 6, 2012 in hardcover where books are sold. One hundred percent of Kristi's profits from It’s a Big World, Little Pig! will benefit early childhood literacy programs supported by her Always Dream Foundation.
