So I am probably giving away my age here, but I distinctly remember playing Oregon Trail on the ancient computers in my Elementary School computer lab. The object of the game? To move your settler family from Missouri to Oregon City along the Oregon Trail, and to get them there in one piece. This ended up being a lot more challenging than it sounded. With perils along the way like disease, unfriendly Indians, and lack of food to hunt, it's literally a fight for survival. I can't imagine what our early settlers had to face on their journeys westward, but this educational game helped me, as a child, to be grateful for the many advances we as a society have made since then. Thank Goodness I will never have to go anywhere in a creaky old wagon pulled by horses...I am cringing as I type, since I am terrified of horses! But I always loved Computer Lab time and always looked forward to my untimely death by Dysentery when I took my chances on the Oregon Trail. Recently I got the opportunity to review a whole new take on my favorite classic. The Oregon Trail is BACK, and this time with better graphics than the old-school computer stick people. Red Wagon Games, publisher of interactive entertainment, and game developer DoubleTap Games have announced the availability of The Oregon Trail on the Wii™ system and Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system. This new iteration of The Learning Company’s classic educational action adventure game will be available for a SRP of $19.99 (Wii) and $29.99 (3DS) wherever Wii and Nintendo 3DS games are sold. The Oregon Trail is rated E-10+. Set in the mid-1800s, The Oregon Trail lets players assume the role of a wagon pioneer leader guiding a party of settlers westward across 2,000 miles of winding, rough terrain from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon City on the Oregon Trail. The classic game has now been modernized for all ages on Wii™ and Nintendo 3DS™ and is part of the frenzy of nostalgia over the game, which has yielded everything from band tour promotions ("Fall Out Boy Trail") to humorous references on popular websites ("Digg has broken an axle"). Since 1971, more than 65 million copies of the highly popular game have been sold. The single-player game retraces the historical journey, challenging the gamer to survive and prosper through four unique storylines with three different time periods. Plan and stock up for the dangerous trip, complete a variety of timed challenges including hunting and fishing, and unlock special items along the way. The Oregon Trail on Wii and Nintendo 3DS is the first version of the game where players can drive the wagon on the trail. MY OPINION?
My husband and I have been having a blast reminiscing over this old favorite. The new Oregon Trail is a bit harder to get started on than the original, PC based game. This is NOT a bad thing, though. The reason it's a little more complicated to get the hang of is because they have added all kinds of new bells and whistles to the game that were not there before. You really need to make sure you read all of the menus and instructions. If you pay attention to the methods of play, you'll catch in quite easily and be blazing the trail in no time. Please note: The game play of this game is a lot like the original version and relies on commands and menu interaction. It is more of an RPG and is not an action-packed brawler type game or shoot-em-up game like HALO or Assassins Creed. Although you CAN go hunting and shoot some rabbits and even a deer! I really like this version of the game. I like that The Oregon Trail is brought to life like never before with actual wagon graphics, trail-music to set the mood, and wagons that can be painted and customized. I also like the fact that you can choose between a variety of story modes, all set during different time periods. This changes the game play significantly, allowing for different aspects of this often dangerous, historic journey to shine through. I think this is a great game that any "old fogies" like me would appreciate because it brings back childhood memories. I also think this is a fantastic educational game for school-aged children like my oldest son to enjoy. Not only will they learn about the many hardships settlers had to endure in the 19th century, it can also help teach logic and reasoning at the same time. I make a night of it and enjoy quality time with my son as I tell him stories about MY experiences on The Oregon Trail, back in the 80's when computers were big, slow boxes and I had to walk 5 miles, uphill, in 3 feet of snow, with newspaper wrapped around my feet to get to school each morning. Anyway, definitely check out The Oregon Trail. This game is awesome, and reminds me a lot of the classic game I enjoyed so much as a child! And yes, you can STILL die of Dysentery! BUY IT: You can learn more about The Oregon Trail on their website. You can also check out Red Wagon Games for more great family games. This game is available for a SRP of $19.99 (Wii) and $29.99 (3DS) wherever Wii and Nintendo 3DS games are sold. The Oregon Trail is rated E-10+. WIN IT! I must be about your age. If we were very good in school we were allowed maybe 15 minutes to play OT. My sister and I were given the "new and improved' version when we were in high school. Still fun then, and I bet it's still fun now.
