As many of you already know, I love cloth diapering. A lot. I probably have over 150 cloth-diapers of various brands, styles, and types. I guess you could call me absolutely fluff-obsessed! With 2 babies in cloth, can you really blame me? With all the great cloth-diapering options available in so many fun colors, fabrics and prints, I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest designs in the cloth diapering world. My love affair with all things fluffy started when we discovered we were pregnant with our son Xander, the little booger to the left, just after I had given birth to our daughter, Sophie. (The babies are literally 12 months and 2 weeks apart in age.) We were faced with the fact that we had to prepare for our new arrival, and the cost of keeping two babies in disposable diapers would have been astronomical. We're a one-income family, so there was no way this would be even remotely affordable! A friend of mine then talked to me about cloth diapering. She had been using cloth for some time on her two youngest daughters, and she raved about it. So I started doing some research of my own. I quickly discovered that modern cloth is not what I had envisioned at all. Long gone are the days of huge diaper pins, prefolds, and squeaky rubber pants. Modern cloth had come a long way, making the decision to make the change easy. On top of the fact that cloth diapers behave and look much like their disposable counterparts, they are a much more environmentally sound choice as well. Diapers are already a huge problem in our already overflowing landfills, and it can take up to 500 years for disposable diapers to biodegrade. Eeeek! Also, cloth diapers are free of all of the nasty chemicals often used in disposable diapers, which makes for less rashes and irritation for baby. After learning about cloth and seeing it in action, I was definitely hooked! While cloth diapering can and does save thousands of dollars over a baby's diapering career, the initial start-up cost can be rather daunting. Some diapers cost well over $20.00 EACH! Building a good stash of cloth can get expensive quickly. That's why when I was contacted by Diaper Junction about their new affordable line of diapers, Diaper Rite, I was really excited. I was already familiar with Diaper Junction, since they are a leading retailer in all things cloth diaper related. They carry all of the best, most trusted brands and often have great sales. So I knew that if the folks over at Diaper Junction believed in this product, it must be good! Diaper Rite One Size Diapers look much like some old favorites of mine, GoGreen Pocket Diapers and Kawaii Diapers, but they have a few key differences. These diapers are customized with a cross over snap, an extra row of bottom snaps, and a better placed hip snap. They also come with 2 ultra-absorbent, three-layer microfiber inserts. And another thing that makes these diapers super-appealing? The price! Standard Diaper Rite OS Diapers are only $9.95 each, while the Diaper Rite Bamboo Diapers are only $11.95 each! This is literally HALF of the cost per diaper than many other cloth diaper brands! Did I mention that Diaper Rite Diapers come in a HUGE variety of vibrant colors? I'd love to own one of each! I was thrilled to receive the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper in Nessie, a gender-neutral olive green color. When my diaper arrived, I immediately noticed the extra row of rise snaps as well as the ingenious placement of the hip snaps. These key features allow a much better fit on babies of any size. I also noticed that the fabric used to make the diaper is not at all flimsy, and it has a high-quality feel. The inner of the diaper was also very soft with a generous pocket opening that even my clumsy husband can easily stuff at 2:00AM when he's half asleep. Nice! Take a look! Good looks aside, it was time to get down to business and see how the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper held up against my babies. I tested this diaper during the day and overnight on both babies. Here are my results: TEST BABY 1: Sophia, Age: 2 (in a couple of weeks) Weight: 27lbs My daughter, Sophie, is a very active child. She loves to run, jump, and twirl. As a matter of fact, she never really sits still unless she's getting sleepy. This has posed a bit of a challenge with my diapers on occasion. You see, sometimes her activity causes her diapers and their inserts to bunch or shift. While this doesn't happen too often, it DOES happen, and this causes leaks and discomfort in general. So when I try a new diaper, that's always one of my primary concerns when it comes to my little daredevil. Will the inserts stay in place? I tested the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper on Sophie during the day first. I was definitely impressed by the great fit I was able to achieve on her, thanks to the hip snaps! A good part of making sure a diaper stays in place is in getting the best possible fit. With this diaper, I was able to do just that. Sophie spent the next couple of hours running, climbing, and just being her crazy self. When it was time to change her, I was pleased to see that not only were there no leaks or red marks on her little thighs, the inserts remained perfectly in place within the diaper's pocket. I also tested the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper on Sophie overnight. She is a VERY heavy wetter, so I opted to use 2 inserts in the diaper. (Better safe than sorry!) Again, I was pleased with the results. While the inside of the diaper and the inserts were completely saturated, the outside of the diaper remained dry to the touch, as did my daughter's pajamas. This was wonderful, since waking up to a cold, wet baby is no fun at all! TEST BABY 2: Xander, Age: 1 (in a few weeks) Weight: 23lbs Okay, so my little guy is also known as "The Poop Monster." This kid poops a LOT. And while fecal matter is never pleasant to deal with, his seems to be worse than average. It is messy, often sticky, and smells like something died and had been left out in the sun on a 100 degree day. I love the kid to death, but I have to be honest. His poop is terrible! Recently, it has begun to firm up some, resembling normal poop. But he still suffers from blowouts on a semi-regular basis. When do the blowouts occur? Usually when he's asleep. I can't tell you how many times I have woken up to a very messy baby with poop creeping up his back, soiling his clothing. (ICK!) This is usually because he squirms a lot, causing the poo to creep outside of the diaper. I was very curious to see how the Diaper Rite would hold up against his epic explosions! Like I did with Sophie, I tested this diaper on Xander during the daytime first. I was able to get a great fit on him as well, and was impressed with how snug I was able to get the diaper. After all, he is significantly smaller than his big sister. Unfortunately, I had to change him about 30 minutes later because one of his nasty blowouts happened. I could smell it across the room. I was very happy to see that while the poop itself was pretty messy, it had not migrated outside of the diaper, leaving his back and thighs clean. (Thank Goodness!) I also tested this diaper on Xander overnight. I opted to use both inserts again, just to be on the safe side. As luck would have it, he had ANOTHER major poo that night, and woke up to a very messy diaper. Again, the diaper held the poop in quite well, and my baby didn't need to be handled with rubber gloves as I rushed him to the tub. (Yes, this has actually happened.) So the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper fared very well with both of my babies! Overall, I am very happy with the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper. It is strong and durable, very well made, and offers the perfect fit. It is also very absorbent, preventing unwanted leaks. The only thing I might change is the fact that it doesn't have double leg gussets like some other diapers do. This just happens to be my own personal preference, though, and the absence of them didn't affect how the diaper performed for me. I just happen to like the extra barrier against poop that the double leg gussets provides. Nonetheless, the Diaper Rite OS Pocket Diaper performed extremely well on both of my babies during the day as well as overnight. I think these diapers are reliable, and for around $10 a diaper, they're an absolute steal! I love that these diapers are so economical without sacrificing quality. You could easily build an entire stash for a couple hundred dollars! Diaper Rite is perfect for the family on a budget!
